Pyro AV Now Shipping Pyro Kompressor HD for Super-Charged, High-Quality HD Video Compression
High-Quality MPEG-2 and H.264 Encoding for DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray Disk and Web, Plus Adobe Integration

CERRITOS, Calif. (March 25, 2008) - Pyro AV® by ADS Tech®, today announced that Pyro Kompressor HD®, a PCI Express®-based accelerator solution that accelerates HD MPEG-2 and HD H.264/AVC encoding up to eight times faster than software-only video compression, is now shipping. For time- and cost-conscious video production houses, this translates into a much speedier authoring workflow. Integrated with Adobe® video software with support for Windows® XP and Apple® Mac OS® X Leopard platforms, the solution is a price-performance breakthrough benefiting both video professionals and prosumers.

The single-slot PYRO Kompressor HD board is powered by the Ambric Am2045
TM, a massively-parallel processor with 336 RISC processors, delivering 1.2 teraOPS of video horsepower for consistently high throughput encoding, even for difficult, high-motion video content. A dynamic and affordable solution, Pyro Kompressor HD’s high-quality MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC codecs enable compression for DVD, Blu-ray Disk, web streaming media, archival storage, IPTV, and VOD. It is based on programmable chip technology, so that PYRO Kompressor HD hardware is “future-proofed” and can be updated as video compression standards evolve and other types of video processing become available.

The included Pyro Kompressor HD transcoding software application simplifies production and provides control over input, conversion, encoding, and output. Transcoding can be done from a wide variety of input formats using software decoders. The software features watch folders for job automation, up and down scaling, frame rate conversion, custom settings and a range of pre-defined settings, chapter support, batch encoding that allows for multiple tasks, file drag and drop ease, control over target output file size, and mux’ing streams from different input files.
It can read either uncompressed video input or import compressed files, using a wide range of included decoders to enable transcoding for DV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264, AVCHD, AVC-Intra, VC-1, DVCPRO 25/50/100, DVCPRO-HD, JPEG2000, and YUV files, plus DirectShow and QuickTime import.

Designed as a flexible compression tool, the Pyro Kompressor HD hardware accelerator is also tightly integrated with Adobe®’s video software family. Acceleration functionality is plug-and-play in Adobe Premiere® Pro CS3 and Adobe After Effects® CS3 Professional. The solution can be used for encoding whole video projects or fast iterative test-compressions while editing, compositing or creating special-effects. Adobe integration offers a familiar workflow and quick turnaround.

    Pricing and Availability
Pyro Kompressor HD for the PC is now shipping and will be available through a variety of Pyro AV dealers with an MSRP of $3,495.00.

Honest question: How does that compare to doing it on a high-ish end GPU? We've seen big increases elsewhere by using them.

And if that is a single PCI-e slot, isn't the bottleneck there?

I know Liquid uses the GPU to accelerate some 3D effects but I don't know of any software that uses the GPU to aid MPEG-2/AVCHD encoding?

These solutions serve a segment of the market where time saved really is important. I always look at it this way. $3500 now to get it done 8x faster than software. But around next year we'll be seeing 8-core Nahalem chips. Not only will the Nahalem core be more efficient than Penryn but there will be 8 of them. 16 in a dual cpu system. For $3500 you may almost be able to buy the entire computer and not only will video encoding be faster but so will every other video editing operation.

Then again they may be using a fast quad core as their "8x faster" metric. In addition perhaps they are using super complicated encoding routines that provide superb performance. I'm sure they have researched their target demographic and therefore catered to that niche with this card.

I think this card is way overpriced for what it's doing, here are the issues I see with it...

1-ok I talked about how overpriced it is, I can buy an AXIO LE and do 10 bit Full HD uncompressed for less.

2-CPU's today are fast enough to decode and encode, this up to 8 times is a figure which is completely based on the system you install it in.

3-Never heard of Pyro's codecs, if it was truly that great, the whol video industry would jump all over that.

4-No inputs or outputs, so it's not a capture card, you still need a capture device to bring in footage if it's not via firewire or flash cards.

If this card sold for $450 then maybe...but certainly not at 3,495.00 sheesh!

HD capture can be handled by Blackmagic Designs Intensity Pro card; $349 list and can capture component, HDMI or any of the SD inputs.

That or their DeckLink HD Extreme which includes SDI and XLR audio for $995.

Explore Blackmagic Design products that include professional cameras, broadcast converters, DaVinci Resolve software and live production switchers.

          FCP, PPro, Vegas etc.

Spec sheet shows 5W idle power, typical 15W. I assume "typical" means under load. That's pretty darn good power usage.

On the other hand performance is rated as 2 to 5 times faster than a 3GHz quad. Hmm as I thought, an 8 core Nahalem might be able to keep up with or beat this card in some situations, and that is about a year away.

HDMI? I thought HDMI always includes HDCP. Being able to copy Blurays won't make the MPAA very happy, so I assume they found a loophole?

Devices deemed "professional" often don't apply copy protection. An example is that many of the higher end realtime editing cards capable of analog SD capture don't recognize Macrovision.

The Blackmagic Designs card looks interesting. Is it an X1 or X4 card? I'm not familiar enough with PCI Express cards to recognize the connector except to be pretty sure its not X16

I'd consider ordering one to play with if I have an empty PCI Express slot for it
