Grocery Stocker Found Guilty in Oklahoma Cannibalistic Plot Case

NORMAN, Okla. — Jurors on Thursday heard a soft-spoken man describe in a videotaped interview how he lured a 10-year-old-girl into his apartment, killed her and sexually assaulted and mutilated her body.

Kevin Ray Underwood, who could be executed if convicted of murdering Jamie Rose Bolin, told FBI agents two days after she disappeared in April 2006 that he hit her over the head with a wooden cutting board while she was watching television and playing with his pet rat.

Agents asked Underwood what the girl said after he hit her.

"That's something that's haunted me forever since it happened," he said. "She started yelling, I'm sorry,' which I'm like, What is she sorry for? She didn't do anything wrong. It's me. I'm the one that should be sorry.'"

Underwood, 28, showed no emotion while the confession was played. One of his attorneys, Matthew Haire, held his head in his hands and looked at the ground.

Prosecution and defense attorneys rested their cases in the trial, which began Monday.

The defense did not present a case or dispute that the former grocery store stocker killed Jamie, a neighbor of his in Purcell, a small community 40 miles south of Oklahoma City. Defense attorneys said they planned to argue during the trial's penalty phase that he doesn't deserve to be executed for the crime.

In the FBI interview, Underwood said he regretted hitting Jamie as soon as he did it, but that by that point it was too late.

"I was sick to my stomach that I was doing this," he told agents Craig Overby and Martin Maag. "I was literally, physically sick."

He said he smothered the girl with his hands, sexually assaulted her lifeless body, draped the corpse over the bathtub and began sawing her neck with a decorative dagger, nearly cutting her head off.

He said the killing was part of a fantasy fueled by macabre Internet pornography. He said his plan was to kill and eat his victim.

"It started off as cannibalism ... I wanted to know what it tasted like, and just the thought of eating someone was appealing to me," Underwood told the agents.

Two days after the girl's disappearance, authorities grew suspicious of Underwood after stopping him and his father at a police checkpoint near the apartment complex. After a short initial interview, he allowed investigators to search his apartment, where they found the girl's nude body stuffed into a plastic tub inside his bedroom closet.

A forensic pathologist testified that Jamie was asphyxiated and had been sexually assaulted. Dr. Inas Yacoub said she was unable to determine if the girl's injuries, including the deep gashes to the neck, occurred before or after her death.

In the videotaped interview, Underwood said his fantasies involving cannibalism began about the time he started taking the antidepressant Lexapro. Defense attorneys plan to call witnesses during the penalty phase of the trial who will testify that Underwood often appeared detached from reality and was using the drug.

Underwood also said he had spent hours standing in the doorway of his apartment, watching children who played in the apartment complex courtyard.

"I had pretty much planned all along to probably get a kid, just mainly because they'd be easier to grab and easier to get rid of afterwards, smaller, and you know, put up less of a fight," he told the agents.

At the end of his videotaped confession, Underwood appeared to become tired and then became physically sick.

No. Taking partial cue from Marv in Sin City I'd start at his ankles with a chain saw & tourniquet's then throw the pieces into a wood chipper while he watched

Best I can do at this point is a frown or mad smiley.

And then he'd be dead and feel no pain, living with every major bone and joint not properly healed is much worse

The jury came back with a death sentence. Under US law a judge cannot impose a death sentence on his own, but must have a death recommendation from the jury first then approve said recommendation.

Wonder if they need volunteers to do the venipuncture and push the button?

Cannibal fantasy child killer sent to death row

            • Kevin Ray Underwood convicted last month of murdering girl, 10
            • He showed no emotion as judge handed down death sentence
            • Girl's family says the impact of her loss is enormous
            • Slaying was fueled by Underwood's cannibalistic fantasy
URCELL, Oklahoma (AP) -- A judge on Thursday took a jury's recommendation and sentenced a former grocery store stocker to death by injection for killing a 10-year-old girl in a cannibalistic fantasy.

McClain County District Judge Candace Blalock approved the death sentence for Kevin Ray Underwood in the killing of the man's neighbor Jamie Rose Bolin.

Underwood, 28, showed no emotion when judge handed down the sentence.

Underwood's attorney, Matthew Haire, said he planned to appeal the sentence. Underwood was convicted last month of first-degree murder.

Linda Chiles, the slain girl's aunt, said the family is prepared for a long appeals process.

"We know that's going to happen, but this does create a lot of closure for us, that we don't have to come back for trial and don't have to sit in the courtroom with him," Chiles said.

The pain of Jamie's loss is still profound, Chiles said, especially with the second anniversary of her death just days away.

"I think about her all the time, and I'm sure everybody else does," Chiles said. "We all talk about her and joke about the cute things she used to do."

Prosecutor Greg Mashburn expressed relief that evidence presented at trial, including crime scene photographs and seized items including sex toys and weapons, can now be moved from his office.

"I don't have to stare at that disgusting stuff that jurors had to look at," Mashburn said. "It was a particularly troubling case to sit through."

During his trial, prosecutors played a videotaped confession in which Underwood told investigators he lured the girl into his apartment April 12, 2006, in Purcell, a small town about 35 miles south of Oklahoma City.

He beat her over the head with a cutting board, suffocated her, sexually assaulted her and then tried to cut off her head with a decorative dagger.

Underwood told authorities he was fueled by sexual fantasies that involved torturing, raping, killing and eating his victim, although no evidence was presented that he cannibalized the girl's body.

Underwood's attorneys did not dispute that he killed the girl, and it took the jury less than an hour to convict him. His attorneys had argued, though, that his life should be spared because he suffered from mental illness that could be helped with medication.

Defense attorneys also said Underwood was bullied as a child and was emotionally and verbally abused by his parents.

Jamie lived with her father in an apartment upstairs from Underwood, and her disappearance prompted a statewide search.

Underwood raised the suspicions of officers at a police checkpoint and he let them search his apartment, where they discovered the child's nude body stuffed inside a plastic tub in his bedroom closet.
