  • Overclocking a P3- Help

    I'm pondering going the PIII-450@600 with
    PC133 RAM route.

    Where can I find hints on cooling the P3?

    How hefty of a power supply do I need?

    Are there any things I should watch out for?

    Make sure you have a load of air being pumped both in and out of the case. At least one fan on the front and preferably two or three on the back of the case. Make sure you buy a retail boxed chip. Make sure your board has a 1/4 divider for the pci bus. If you have a retail box chip then the standard heatsink is not too bad for cooling. It can be bettered by running with the back off. I have heard that the alpha heatsink is very good but i think that if i had 30 odd quid to spend on making my chip faster i would buy a 500 instead that will happily run to 620. I have a std songcheer power supply and i have not had any problems. If you already have pc100 memory try it at 133mhz and it might surprise you and save you 50 notes.

      I first want to mention that I am running an Athlon now, but I was using a PIII 450@600 prior to it. I agree with everything that birdy said except for the point about buying a retail boxed chip. The most well known PIII for hitting 600 has been an SL35D OEM unit. I purchased one (week 28) back in August and it would hit 600 with ease. The other thing I'd like to mention is although birdy is right about a standard hs/fan being adequate, I have an example that backs up the use of an Alpha. My PIII 450 with a standard (read that small) dual-fan heatsink required 2.2v to keep it stable. I bought an Alpha P3125 for it and was immediately able to drop the voltage to the default of 2.0. So besides having the awesome cooling power of the Alpha (About a 15-20 degree F drop) I was able to lower the voltage, further cooling the chip. BTW, I was only using a Micron PC100 stick @ 133, and I was able to run it @ 630(140 FSB), although not very stable, and I could even get it to POST @ 675 (150 FSB). I think if I had better RAM I could have run at least @ 630, but I'll never know since I sold it a month ago. Oh yeah, my Athlon runs @ 770 and whoops that PIII easily...

        i bow to the superior cooling thing. I have had 2 450 retail boxes and both have hit 600 rock stable so i will stick with them as you can never guarantee what chips you are gonna get. the latest one is an sl37c
