  • Radeon X1600XT vs Radeon HD2400pro

So I went to get the kids rig a video card, since the Parhelia won't play the games I bought em for Xmas.

However, I have not kept up on video hardware like I used to, so I don't know which is better than which these days....

Came home with a 256meg 8x AGP Radeon HD2400pro (the cheapest AGP they had in stock that met the system requirements for the games).

    In my rig, I have a 512meg 8x AGP Radeon X1600XT.

Which is gonna be the better card? The X1600 is a DX9 card, the HD2400 is DX10. But the X1600 had double the memory. Dunno which GPU is really more powerful. Not really concerned about DX10 at this point.

Also, there is an issue with the X1600 and my old KT400 chipset, forcing me to lag behind with the 6.10 cats. The HD2400 is not included on the list of cards affected by this (at least not yet).

Just looking for input before I start tearing my rig apart needlessly. If I'm better off staying with the X1600, I'll toss the HD2400 at the kids rig...but if it's worth my while, I'll snatch up the HD2400 for myself...

    TIA

OK...got tired of waiting for you slackers
Tore into my rig. Put the HD2400 in it.
Went through a NIGHTMARE of getting the drivers to work.
    came with cat7.10
ATI site said latest is 7.12
Vistiontek said latest for their version of this card is 7.11

ATI 7.12 would not detect card, so no install
Visiontek 7.11 installed, but nothing DX9 would work
After screwing with these, and the painfully long uninstalls, went with the 7.10 packaged with the card.
Things at least start now...but WOW...what a POS this card is!

    3Dmark06.....
    2205 on the x1600 (I know, crap, but it's only an xp2800+)
    1244 on the HD2400 (1/2 the score on a newer dx10 card???)

Fired up TF2....horrible texture corruption from the intro screen...and only got worse from there.

Am I doing something wrong here?
I fully uninstalled the ATI software with their uninstall util between each driver change.
Can the card really suck this badly?

Can only agree with your experience with the 2400 and this confirms your benches to be about as expected ....................... in general I prefer to buy DX9 hw designs when that is what you need for XP - I don't trust these buggers to do a decent dual design with DX10 hw

It seems the whole HD2xxx series is broken. The VisionTek forums have all sorts of ppl bichin about it.

They allegedly have it fixed in the 7.13 drivers, but the VisionTek cards are not detected by the ATI site's version...so they say to wait for the VisionTek version of the 7.13s...but of course, no indication when that might be.

I've gone ahead and set the kids rig up with my old x1600xt, cause I gotta give the rig to them for xmas, and I aint giving them something that doesn't work. At least now, their rig runs the games I bought em.

I'd go return this POS HD2400 right now, but I aint goin nowhere near the mall the Saturday before xmas...

The X1600XT will beat the pants off of the HD2400Pro.

i guess being able to do all those extra "bells and whistles" doesn't help if you do them slower.

It has nothing to do with being DX10. It is a budget card while the X1600XT is a mid-range card (although price has dropped now).

Well, I returned the HD2400, then drove across town to hit up a CompUSA going out of buiz sale. Picked up a BFG 7300GT 512meg (DX9 card) for the same price I payed for the HD2400. There's no returning this one...all sales are final now at CompUSA.

The 7300gt scores only marginally better than the 2400HD, but at least it runs games without total screen corruption. It went into the kids rig, and I'm back to the x1600xt in mine...
