Remember the TOS episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" written by Harlan Ellison where a time portal called the Guardian of Forever is discovered?
Remember the ST: Animated Series where (old) Spock uses the Guardian of Forever to go back in time and meet his younger self?
Word is that those are the jumping off points for ST XI, with the wrinkle being that a Romulan named Nero (Eric Bana) discovers the Guardian and decides to use it to eliminate Kirk. Spock somehow gets access to it and goes back to warn his younger self to protect a cadet named James T. Kirk.
There is also word that Kirk's 'cheating' during his last Kobayashi Maru run will be his introduction in the film.
