  • First Delta IV Heavy launch tonight

from Launch Complex 37 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

If successful it will be the largest active booster in the inventory with an LEO lift capability of ~23 mt.

Atlas V Heavy 5H2 is theoretically more powerful at ~25 mt to LEO, but has never flown.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 Heavy, still in development for 2010, is slated to lift ~28 mt to LEO.

Ares V would blow them all away at 130-140 mt to LEO, but it's not slated to test until 2017 and won't be a commercial launcher.

    Launch window: 01:39 - 03:42 GMT (8:39 PM - 10:42 PM EST)

    Payload: USAF DSP 23 satellite

Description: The Northrop Grumman-built Defense Support Program (DSP) satellites have been the spaceborne segment of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD’s) Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment System since 1970. DSP satellites use infrared sensors to detect heat from missile and booster plumes against the earth’s background. Air Force Defense Support Program satellites provide early detection and warning of missile launches and nuclear explosions to National Command Authorities and operational commands.
