    HDD S.M.A.R.T capability --------->Enabled
    IDE Ultra DMA Mode -------------->AUTO

It detect my Quantum Fireball 10.2A Perfectly as a LBA UDMA 2 hard disk.
I use AUTO in my settings and so my bios dont use Quantum setting for my
disk(the Quantum setting are for Normal drives not for LBA as my bios

I use WIN98SE for 2 weeks but my problem exist long before when i used Win98

    99% CPU use.
    I use a PII450 @504Mhz but o/c only for the last 1 month.(4.5x112Mhz)
My Firaball is connected with a 12inch IDE cable in Primary IDE socket all
alone. My Creative DVD5240E-1 is also using another 12inch IDE cable and
    connected in Secondary IDE socket.
In device manager i get my hard disk as a GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47
The DMA box is not checked and when i check it it gives me the following
    message:
    (((( Unsupported hardware alert.
changing this setting may have undesirable effects with your hardware.
Contact your hardware ventror to ensure that this settings is supported.)))

I have even ordered a UDMA66 cable as my last hope.
    Any suggestions?????????

Just check the DMA box, reboot and you should be just fine. IF not, you can always boot in safe mode and change it.

      Rags,

The problem is that even if i check the DMA box and restart, it never stays checked.(it seems than win98 dont like my hard drive.
However my bios detects my hard drive fine:

The cable fits into ide connector, but unless your mobo supports udma 66,it will serve no added benifit, connected to a mobo that only supports udma 33,it will default to this.
Double check the hard drives parameters as to what the bios is reporting it as.
            Please correct me if I'm wrong,but I thought udma33 was mode 4.
Also make sure all things in bios are enabled as to your hard drive ie.smart drive, etc.
Quantum's website can furnish you with all the pertinent info you may need,so check there.

              I KNOW I CAN GET UDMA66.
But that wasn't the case for buying the UDMA66 cable.
The problem is that i can get U-DMA33 or else UDMA-2 (UDMA-4 IS UDMA66).
After 4 moths of serrching about the subject
              it is my only sollution.
BECAUSE i can find here in Coventry UK a VERY good quality IDE cable ,the alternative
chose was to buy a UDMA66 cable hopping to have the DMA box in device manager PERMANENTLY checked.
I know that if someone owns a UDMA66 card or it is integrated in his MOBO he can get 66MB/s(in theory at least)ONLY if he use a UDMA66 cable in his UDMA66 Hard disk.
So lets hope i get what my hard disk is capable of!!!!!!!!

By the way ,it may be that my bios is stating that i'm using UDMA-2(the FU**ING WIN98SE dont) so i'm using the mode PIO4 and i'm getting 8800Mb/sec(HDTach)but a pitfull
99%CPU use<-----THIS is why i'm trying to get UDMA ....TO GET AT LEAST 33% CPU use.

I am a bit late here-been doing the fdisk boogy.
Looking at your bios revision, check your hard drive vendors site. Award bioses and others pre I think 10 98 need you to install a UDMA 66 hard drive patch or upgrade to the latest bios.

                          Alessandro,

I was having a similar problem with my Seagate Medalist Pro and Asus P2B. Box just would not stay checked. Switched to one of those fancy UDMA cables, and Bingo, haven't had a problem since. So your cable idea sounds good to me.

Let us know when you figure it out.
