    Which PIII to overclock?

    I have an Asus P2B motherboard with 128RAM. I want to get a PIII that will overclock to well over 600mz. I can adjust FSB, but not voltage.

    I have checked overclockers.com and am considering the 450 and 550. Obviously, I want to spend as little as possible, but I don't want to end up with a bum chip that won't reach 600+mz.

    Any recommendations from your experience?

    I have a P3 450 on my secondary system...and good luck getting one above 558 or 567 without a Peltier...I have only been able to get mine to 567 (126 FSB at CAS2-2-2)...But, as far as I have read, etc...the 450 is probably the most overclockable...If you spend the dough for a 500,550/600, obviously you will be getting faster Cache memory, etc...so the card will clock higher...but won't reach as high of a FSB...
    And don't get me wrong, here...567 is very good for a 450!!! Alot of people have only been hitting 112 on the FSB(504Mhz...) so I have been happy with the 126!!! Plus, my HSDRAM PC133 smokes at 126 Mhz FSB...blows the doors off anything of the same meggage at 100Mhz!!!

      I just got a P3-450 from Pc Nut for $275. They Sell a pretested chip with a heatsink and they are tested to 600 mhz with PC133 memory. If you go with the P450 and want to do 600mhz, you might run into a problem with your AGP card since the P2b only has a 2/3 divider for the AGP bus and not a 1/3 like on the newer BX boards out there. If your gonna get another board+chip...look at getting an athlon instead..

        The experience of most here is that Matrox boards are very stable at the 133 2/3 bus speed (89MHz AGP) Stick with a G400 and you shouldn't have a problem.

          get your credit card. find a shop with a good returns policy. buy as many p3 450s as your limit will allow. run em. select the best and take the worst back. job done. I have a 450 which is happy to run at 600. When i firdt got it i could only go to 581 so maybe they're like car engines and need running in for a decnt overclock. I had similar problems with a celly 300. spent a couple of weeks at 373 and then moved up. eventually i got 504 but not stable. In some case i have found that extra voltage makes the problems worse and not better.

            According to DuRaNgO my P3-450 can go to 600Mhz and maybe above on my P2B

            Check here for more information or to ask Jim (Durango) what to do

              jake, i assume you are useing a bx chip set board. if so then you can adjust the core voltage its a bit of a pain but it can be done. look at ya toms hardware (he dose have good info just usally don't write it him self.) anyway you can tape or nail polish certin pins on the cpu to get higher core voltages. i think you limminted to 2.2 volt useing this method, but hey im running my p2 350 at 450 with core 2.2 and no problems. and if it gets you more stable then hey your good to go.

                  Relax real Jake, I must use Jake plus numbers to be counted here. So be it.

                  Thanks for all the input everybody. Because I cannot risk getting a bad 450mz (my bad luck is proven), I think I will go with the 550mz and hope for good overclocking.

                    Go BOXED Intel for the processor. Do not buy an OEM processor....

                    They are generaly (not always), of an inferior grade and do not OC as well as the BOXED processors..

                    I have a PIII-450 (Boxed), with Toshiba cache, that OC's to 600Mhz with no extra cooling and the standard 2.0V on an ABIT BE6 motherboard...

                    I did add a 2nd fan to help keep the temps a little lower, but it ran fine without it - just a little warm is all. I use PC133Memory.Com's PC133HSDRAM, single 128MB stick. Works like a champ...

                      P3/500, baby...

                      Got the Soyo BAIII+
                      No overvoltage, just set it to 120/5 for 600mhz.

                      If I turn up the L2 cache latency from 8(std) to 15, I can get 620mhz reliably. But the performance isn't much better than the 600mhz settings.

                        Of course, if starting from scratch, do an Athlon@500.

                        It'll o/c to 650 and smoke most 733mhz P3's out there.
                        Just find a decent Mobo for it.....
