  • John Carmack's "Armadillo Aerospace MOD" flies....

    Video of MOD's flight (MPEG).

This in preparation for the upcoming X-Prize Cup contest sponsored by Northop Grumman to produce a private lunar lander.

In this contest the entrant must lift off from one pad, hover, translate horizontally under controlled flight to another pad, hover then land.

Looks like John Carmack's guys have it pretty well licked.

MOD (Module) will fly for the 90 second prize and Pixel (last year's entry) for the 180 second prize.

Armadillo has higher aspirations for MOD; they want to be able to build boosters with up to 64 of them bundled into an array. Because each MOD has a fixed output the thrust can be tailored to the need.

LOTS of big aerospace companies think Armadillo is onto something. The below image is where they're heading with the next generation of MOD and yes, they're going manned as well.
