    Vogel's too young for McCoy.

    Everyone else looks somewhat promising.

There is also a rumor that Karl Urban is up for a role. One speculation is that it could be Captain Garrovick of the USS Farragut, one of Kirks CO's before being posted to the USS Enterprise and a victim of the hemoglobin-eating entity in "Obsession".

      Casting continued: known other characters

Federation Captain: ???? (Kirk's old CO, Garrovick of the Farragut??)
Capt. Christopher Pike: ???? (Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk)
      George Kirk (Kirk’s father): ????
      Mrs. Kirk (Kirk’s mother): ????

      unconfirmed cast

      ????: Greg Grunberg (expected)
old James T. Kirk: William Shatner (rumored possible)

Chris Pine has been confirmed for Jim Kirk.

        6' ½" (1.84 m) (Shatner = 5' 9½" (1.77 m) )

McCoy has also been cast, pending negotiations.

Karl Urban: Bourne Supremacy, LOTR II & III, Out of the Blue

        6' 1" (1.85 m) (DeForest Kelly = 5' 10" (1.78 m) )

At least now Kirk won't have to stand on orange crates around taller characters

I'm hearing that the negotiations will continue and he could be put in up to the end of filming.

Personally I think they'd probably be better without him. He's just gotten too campy and I think it would carry over into the film.

Could be true, especially if they do what other reboots have done and go much darker & serioius...Batman Begins especially. As serious as it was word is that Dark Knight is even more so.

                BTW, another treat....

                  New cast confirmations (except where noted);

                  Christopher Pike: Bruce Greenwood

Amanda Grayson (Spocks mother - young): Wynona Ryder

George Samuel Kirk Sr. (Kirk's father): Chris Hemsworth

Dr. Carol Marcus (mother of Kirk's son, David): Jennifer Morrison (rumored, but she's been seen on the set with a uniform cover)

                  Janice (Yeoman) Rand: Rachel Nichols

                  No word on Sarek yet.

Design work will be shared between Ryan Church (Transformers) and John Eaves (long time Trek designer).

Filming started Nov. 7, 2007 and will end in March.

An interesting and only slightly off-topic aside: The Star Trek novel Enterprise tells the story (non-canon, of course) of Kirk's first mission as Captain of the Enterprise. It gives Rand's back story as her being two years younger than her given chronological age. It seems her parents' ship suffered a warp drive breakdown between systems. They had to complete the voyage through normal space. Although two years passed, they only aged a few months due to relativistic time dilation. She gave her age as seventeen in order to get into the academy, although she was really only fifteen.

Most of the Star Trek novels are pretty crappy (TNG Dyson Sphere is a good example), but I've seen one or two that might make good source material for a film.

(I mean, really: a starship crewed entirely by HORTA? Give me a break.)

Wow, I just looked up most of the cast members on imdb, Nimoy looks as old as Spock

Do you guys know what the movie's storyline might be.

                        Snippets.

The Romulans try to prevent Kirk from interfering with their plans for conquest by going back in time and killing his father before his birth, with Eric Bana being the lead Romulan. Nimoy as old Spock somehow escapes the timeline changes and intercedes to keep the it intact.

I understand there is much more, but that's all that's leaked out.

WAIT A MINUTE! I've seen this movie before! Only it was a robot out to kill someone's mother! Or was it some cyborgs or something trying to stop a spaceship launch?

IS STAR TREK SO USED UP THEY CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING NEW?

Hehe. Yeah. . . . Wasn't there a movie about some cyborgs that went back in time to interfere with the technological development of some familiar species?

Hey, isn't there an upcoming Stargate movie where, just before he is executed for crimes against the universe, Baal goes back in time and kills people off to prevent the formation of SG-1, and they have to go back in time to stop him?

(Yes, SG-1 is pretty much all used up too. It pains me to admit it.)
