  • Lost Power Supply??

Help, I had a power outage when my computer (Home built ASUS P2B PII 350) was on and I was out of the house. I got back and when I hit the power, nothing happened, no fan no nothing. It was on a surge protector. The protector still lights as being okay. I tested the swith, it is working. I checked the standby lead and there was nothing coming from it. The out plug on the back of the power supply for monitors has juice. I finally opened the PS and saw that the fuse was blown. Don't know why it was blown and not the fuse in the surge protector. I replace the fuse, a 5A 250V, but the second I plugged the power cord into it, the fuse burned. Please help fast.

    Thanks,
    Tom

It's possible the whole power supply is shot. It happens. Just hope its that and not your whole mobo/cpu ... thats a bad thing.
If you have another box, try borrowing its power supply and verify that it is your power supply thats the problem.
I'm assuming you already opened the power supply and removed the NO SERVICABLE PARTS INSIDE sticker (my ass :P i replace lots of fans and stuff inside). Make sure none of the capacitors and such are blown inside, but dear god don't touch any of them, unless you fancy a nasty charge of electricity (not sure if its enough to kill you, but its a lot).

Thanks for the ideas. Sorry for my ignorance but can you tell me how to tell if the capacitor is shot? I know what they look like but not much else. Also, I pulled the PS for the box and replace the fuse again and then plugged it in without hooking it back up to the computer. The fuse blew the second the juice hit. Thanks again.

The easiest way is to look for anything charred and black =)
Failing that, if any of the little resistors and such look blown (ie have a hole in them where they shouldn't) that could cause it too.
Essentially, you're looking for anything that looks out of places.
Sounds like the whole power supply is shot though, and you'd be best off just replacing it.
