Something old, something new, something working, something screwed!!

    Hmmm..

Been doing some research into hard drives as some of you may recall. Finally made a decision on which to get. Ordered the 18.2GB Quantum Atlas 160/M Wide 10K... This thing is 5ms average seek, 2M cache, 10,000 RPM, and capable of burst 160Mb per second. I think it's going to be a screamer.

On a side note, I decided to call ABIT and see what tests I could perform on my BE6 (remember the troubles with overclocking the PIII-600?). Since I could successfully OC the 600 at work, but not at home, I thought that maybe, just maybe, I had one of the boards that had the busted voltage regulation.

The test: Go into soft-menu II, set the voltage to 2.2V. Save settings, reboot. Go into chip-set settings, and look at the voltage. It should show what you set in soft-menu II....

    Mine didn't - it still showed 2.01V.

Bugger - no help for it, gonna order a BE6-II to replace it, while the BE6 goes in for repare. Then when I get it back, I can build a second system. Then watchout. That 600Mhz may have some life yet in an OC'd environment....

        Eventually...

I just swapped out the BE6 for my old BX6-R2 temporarilly. I put my PIII-600 in place, set the AGP divider to 1/1, and the CAS/RAS to 2. That's 'bout as much as I can do until the new parts come in.

It kind of stinks, but at least my machine still runs....

Gol-Derned UPS... My drive was supposed to be delivered today....

It never left the pickup location (4 days ago - they lost the bloody thing... Now the vendor says it may be 10-15 days before they can re-ship a new drive)...

          Argh!!!

            Guyver:

You may wanna invest in a HD cooling system if you haven't already. 5400RPM Quantum drives run hot as is; that 10,000RPM monster must run extremely hot. I suppose thats good; if your stove ever dies and you REALLY have a craving for scrambled eggs, you can cook em up on your new HD.

              Rock,

Why do you think I wanted two of the things (the Cheetah 9.1GB is also a 10KRPM drive)...

That way, when running SETI during the winter months on my OC'd 600Mhz P-III (when the BE6 comes back), I'll be able to turn off the furnace in my apartment and stay nice and cozy.... (Listening to the popping and crackling of the data heads seeking)

The clowns found it.... In Massachusettes... Late last night they discovered it's location, placed it on a truck, and it made it to illinois early this morning. It left later this morning to Eastern Iowa. It just left there for mid-west Iowa. I should see the drive tomorrow...

This is almost as excitin' as getting my Max...

Alright - maybe not that excitin' but sure nuff looking forward to it....

                    Holy smokin' drives...

                    This thing is bloody-well awesome...

Windows 98SE boots in about 11 seconds (while initializing a whole kit and kaboodle of pieces and parts)...

Completely re-installed 98SE to make certain that there were no hidden gotchas...

Office 97 Pro (with all features) installed in under 2 minutes.

As soon as I locate that hard drive benchmark, I'll post some numbers....

Guyv - Who now has one of the fastest HD's available to the general public. Now I need the Ultra 160 SCSI controller to push it to it's maximum performance...

5 Year warranty, 10K RPM, 2MB Buffer, 160MB/S - Who needs ATAPI anymore....
