This would be "bad" if true... but how much can we really believe The Register about something so incredible...

Nine months early??? I know it's Intel, but can even they do such a thing??

Maybe it will work as well as Camino... that would be fun...

Be careful, the Register is not a reliable source of information...

        so wait and see.

say consider this too. intel's chip would have to run at 1100 mhz to perform as well as amd's 1000mhz (900mhz curently anonced)part?

besides intel is cunently short on decent engineers thats why they bought the hp designed chip and the 820 chip set is haveing mega problems. unless intel says it and even then i would have to see a product to beleave them, ie i wouldn't trust a release date from intel as far as i could through the ceo across the room (into a pit of poison tiped spikes.) think im a little blood thristy? nope i just geting tired of all the vapor ware we seem to be seeing these days.

Has anyone even heard of Williamette Aplpha silicon hitting OEM's yet? Normally Intel puts out Alpha silicon at least 6 months, in Itaniums case a year, before it's actual release. It is called testing for errata, which is a rather important part of the whole CPU thing.

Also, I really don't think that Anyone can produce a stable 1.1 GHz CPU on silicon, using any x86 based core. They will need to switch to copper. As far as I am aware, Intel's copper manufacturing will not be online until 2Q 2000. This means that the 1.1 GHz Williamette would not be really feasible until 3Q 2000, as is planned.

I guess Intel could pull it off if they really wanted to spend the money on it. But seriously, AMD could also counter quite easily. The Dresden fab will start full copper production in Q1 2000. Their alpha copper chips are already running 1+ GHz and the Athlon Ultra will have up to 2 MB full speed L2 cache. We will have to wait to see for certain, but I doubt Intel will do it.

Kryotech is closing the hypothetical gap. Their Athlons have reached 900Mhz.
Thankyou AMD for not screwing us over with a CPU multiplier lock!

Yes, but doing validation runs right now. Not producing chips for commertial sale. YET
