  • Could someone answer a P3 overclocking question..

    I recently set my bus to 112 on my asus P2b so my P3 450 is at 504. I don't have any way to monitor the temp of the cpu, only the motherboard but I have a front case fan, two case fans I mounted blowing onto the processor and motherboard, a pentium fan on my G400 heatsink, the boxed P3 fan and the power supply fan blowing out the top. I have been watching the temp and it's gotten up to 106f in the daytime, is this bad? We are having some extra high temps in so. cal right now but at night it's down to 96f.It's not acting strangely in any way so am I ok then?Is it good to leave it overclocked all the time? Sorry for all the questions but I appreciate the help.

    Kookstick, if your talking 106f under a load condition you should be alright. i think max cpu temp is 130f to 145f peek temp. my system a overclocked p2 350 at 464 runs idle at 27c and under a load never reaches higher than 32c. these are real low numbers as the system has 5 fans in it. and is in my basement.

    one rule the cooler you run your system the better it will run (stable/faster) read the artical on cooling the bx chipset at www.overclockers.com a very good site for info another is www.hardocp.com

    heat is the enemy kill it.

    as for running your system over clocked all the time it will not do any damage (no more than overclcoking your cpu already dose.) i run mine 24hours 7 days a week. overclcokers also has info on what overlocking dose to your cpu. an example given is if the average lifetime of an intel cpu is 30 years over clocking to x raises temp to x and shortens the life of the cpu by 3 years. so instead of lasting 30 years it may die in 27years. now that last bit of info is probibly mesed up as i read that awhile back but you get the idea overclcoking a cpu shortens the life about 10% more or less. the way things are going a cpu will be obsolete every 3 to four years. (i mean totaly useless if you want to stay on the bleading edge you have to replace a cpu every year at the rate we are going).

        one of the best investments you could make would be a new heatsink/fan assm. for your cpu, the life of your cpu can be extended by running it as cool as you can and you'll be able to reach much higher settings with the right ram, some pc-100 can run at 124mhz bus

          Durango- So the boxed processor's heatsink/fan combo are not very good? I thought they were. What would you recommend? I was thinking of picking up some pc133 corsair ram when the prices eventually drop but my motherboard doesn't have support for 124 mhz bus, only 100,103,112 and 133.

            I used the factory cooling system on my PIII-450 for quite some time before adding a forced induction system into the low side of it.

            Should be fine as long as ambient system temp (air temp within the case) is kept low enough.

              I have a P2 350 /w an Asus P2B board and I CAN'T overclock this pig in ANY way. How the hell did you get yours running at 464? Did you have to unlock the multiplier somehow? I thought P2-350's were multiplier locked or something.

                my 450 clocked at 504 is has never burped in this southern california heat. right now it is at 50C (which is a bit high for my liking but it is hot today and has been running for 12 hours plus without a break.) My celery 333 oc'd at 83mhz used to run a lot cooler. time for a new case.

                  A CPU temp of 106°F isn't that bad. Seriously though you should consider replacing the Heatsink/Fan. The only reason why I say this is that you said this was the "System" temp. Unless you are using some software solution, like CPU-Idle, the CPU's temp 10-15° higher. Very near this point is where you will begin to get errors. The quickest solution would be to open the case, move it to an open area and place 10" or < fan next to it to provide "extra" ventilation. Especially for those times when the system is idling. That is actually when you will get the highest temperatures. This is also why it is advisable to "burn-in" a CPU under a load for a couple of days. This actually helps stabilize the chip electrically. I use both Motherboard Monitor and CPU-Idle when I'm not playing games. Combined with a TennMax cooler the CPU temp stays within 5-10° of ambient temperature, and even a few degrees cooler than the system temp. I'm running a P-III 450 @ 558 (or 124 Mhz bus speed)with the standard 2v. My second system is a PPGA Celeron 366 @ 550 with an Alpha cooler. It "idles" at ambient temp with software cooling. Both system run rock stable 24/7 as far as the hardware is concerned. They will also run faster with a sacrifice is stability, which I consider to be unacceptable.
