  • Confirmation needed on config change...

Been a while since I popped here last, been playing with my main system, and then sat and thought about it a lot.

Came up with the idea that AGP is finally dead, and PCIe is the only way forward.
The Gainward Bliss 7800GS+ is not fully capable at 1680x1050 in all games, and for the future, it can only get worse.
I was considering overvolting and such, but the gain would have been small, and I wouldn't have been impressed. Likely i would have fried it.

SO. My secondary system having a PCIe slot, i've decided to migrate to it.

    I'm going from:
    Athlon X2 4200+ @ 250fsb->2750MHz
    2x512Mb DDR500 Corsair @3-3-3-8
    7800GS+ AGP 512Mb (7900 24 pipe)

    to:
    Pentium D 945 3.4GHz @ 266fsb->4540MHz 1.35V
    2x512Mb GSkil DDR2-800 @1068MHz 5-5-5-15 2.2V
    ->New PCIe G8800GTS/GTX or 2900XT

after seeing the perfs of the 2900XT, i'm leaning towards the 8800GTS-640Mb.
I'm just gonna try and wait a couple of weeks to see if the prices drop at all...

Before someone mentions Core2 or such, this mobo doesn't support it. its a i955X board.
I upgraded to it from a i915 board cos the i915 didn't take dual core.
New processor, new board, pisses me off.........not this time.

As far as my tests have shown, a 4.5GHz Pentium D seems equivalent or better to the X2.

    3dm05 cpu test
    x2 - 6501
    PD - 8472 @4430MHz
    ------8625 @4540GHz

    3dm06 cpu test
    x2 - 2037
    PD - 2186 @4430MHz
    ------2229 @4540GHz

    Cinebench 9.5
    x2 1cpu - 408
    x2 2cpu - 763
    x2 C4D - 435
    x2 OGLsw - 1902

    PD 1cpu - 389
    PD 2cpu - 727
    PD C4D - 537
    PD OGLsw - 1917

    All on aircooling (loud)

The X2 mobo, memory and graphics and cpu are gonna be sold to pay for the new PCIe graphics card.

If i was gonna change mobo etc, then i would go Core2 all the way, but will be too much money...

Anyone with a pentium D ? What type of config do you have, and is it fluid in games ?
Oblivion, Stalker, Test drive Unlimited, C&C3, etc...

I'm aiming for fluidity and FSAA and AF in 1680x1050...

    All comments welcome

How's it feel to be rich?

    *chuckle*

Seriously though, I've kind of (sadly) given up on ATI for the immediate.

I would have loved to go ATi, but it just isn't looking soo good right now.
Waiting til september or so for the 65nm refresh is not an option cos my buyer won't wait that long...and its not easy finding someone who will buy a S939 AGP system...

        Oblivion is an absolute monster.

On Tom's Hardware VGA charts at 1600x1200 no AA 8xAF MAX quality w/ X6800
        8800GTX 32.5fps
        8800GTS 640mb 23.6fps
        X1950XTX 19.3fps

        At HardOCP ~roughly same settings
        8800GTX 56.5fps
        8800GTS 640mb 46.5fps

Also HardOCP for STALKER 1920x1200 NoAA 8xAF
8800GTX 52.4fps (100% enabled grass density) ___only difference
        8800GTS 43.9fps (50% enabled grass density __/

        Anandtech STALKER 1920x1200
        8800GTX 44.5fps
        8800GTS 33fps

Looking at all these benches makes me realize there is more of a gap between GTX and GTS than I thought, if you have some extra cash burning a hole in your wallet it might be worth it. And itll help make up for your CPU, most of these benches are done on a highend Core 2 Duo.

        C&C3 1600x1200 FSAA 4x 16xAF
This game is funny, seems to be limited to 30fps. So both cards max it out for average fps, so here is the minimums:
        8800GTX 25fps
        8800GTS 20fps

Couldn't find a Test Drive Unlimited benchmark, but it ran ok with my current system (but with a X800XT) at 1280x1024.

HD2900XT, although potentially good, has some hurdles to overcome, so I wouldn't really list it as an option right now.

I'm leaning a lot towards the 8800's, and yes, the extra shaders on the gtx seem to be doing their job quite well.

just hope the price drops pretty soon

On a side note, i have noticed a MASSIVE hit in Test drive unlimited when HDR is ON.
I am supposing it is the Nv hardware, since it isn't a Nvidia sponsored title.
Without HDR, i can put 4xAA and 8xAF for the same FPS....

Do you use HDR on it ? if so, around what FPS you getting ?

I'm in High 20's to low 30s with HDR in 1024x768, and the same even in 1680x1050...
Even checked on a friends Barton 2800+/NF2 mobo/7800GS(16 pipe) all stock and he gets the same FPS !!! with or without HDR !!

added the CPU scores for 4.54GHz on 3dm05 and 06.

Quite happy with them if the PC can hold up

Edit: Anyone with a Core2 like to give me what they get in Cinebench scores for the CPU side, i'd like to see where i'm at with this config...

not sure the 9.5 is the latest one, will check and update if it is so. Even tho i'm sure the GPu will do the business, i'd like to know where I stand vis a vis the benchmarks of today (all done on Core2Duo or higher...)

edit2: 9.5 is the latest, sweet.

edit3: Clocked or unclocked results. I clock, so why not others ?

Holy Crap! , the 3dm06 CPU score blows both of mine out of the water...

All of the Cinebench are considerably higher too, damn Core2 is good...
Its so comfortably in front that i'm not even gonna try to go over 4.54

Thanks LvR, its put it into perspective

Hang on - you want a "CPU score" or juts a plain 3DM06 score? - what I posted was a vanilla "overall" 3DM06 score.

Will post a "CPU score" shortly - have to run 3DM06 again.

                          Edit later

OK then - 3DM06 "CPU score" 2781 - sorry for the confusion.
