The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

    Studio: 20th Century Fox

Release Date: May 9, 2008 (USA)

    Production Status: Pre-production

Synopsis: A remake of the 1951 classic sci-fi film about an alien visitor and his giant robot counterpart who visit Earth.

Rumor: this version will more closely follow the source story "Farewell To The Master" by Harry Bates, meaning that Gort (originally Gnut) is actually the commander of the mission.

Director: Scott Derrickson (Exorcism of Emily Rose, Hellraiser: Inferno)

    Writers: TBD

    Cast: TBD

Factoid: Harry Bates was the founding editor of "Astounding Stories of Super-Science", which soon changed its name to the shorter "Astounding Stories".

I'm waiting (hoping) for "The Day of the Triffids".

Hopefully they stick the same basic plot (nuclear arms etc) - I think it is just as relevant today as it was over half a century ago.

One of my favorite movies; they better do it justice.

I agree. IMO we're dealing with one of the best movies ever made. As such this film needs to respect the original even more than most remakes.

Interesting note: in Arthur C Clarke's "List of the best Science-Fiction films of all time" "Day The Earth Stood Still" is listed just above Clarke's own "2001: A Space Odyssey". What's that tell you?

I'd still rather watch the original "War of the Worlds' any day over the abomination made a couple years ago.
