  • DVD -> Divx tools.

I have never had any luck finding a solution to this seemingly sinple problem. Whenever I have found something that people think work it always ends up with loss of audio sync or mangled video.

Auto Gordian knot especially has always promised big but generally fails at an early stage.

I am looking to find a collection) of tools that will allow me to -

-Rip a DVD to the HD (I have a couple of these already)

-Convert it to Divx / Xvid / ffdshow (whichever, as long as it plays on my Media Centre) MPEG4 with AC3 sound and good control over the eventual file size.

I find myself with a shiny new NAS box full of space and thought it might be nice to not have to rely on my occasionally noisy DVD drive for movies.

I haven't done this stuff lately, but I never had problems with AutoGK (and DVD Decrypter).

I've seen Dr.DivX recommended as well as FairUse Wizard and DVDx (plus Gordian Knot, obviously). Don't know about HandBrake.

DVDFab Decrypter has pretty much replaced DVD Decrypter?
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Possibly I wasn't doing the initial DVD Decrypter stage properly.

I might try the whole rigmarole again this evening with the latest version of Auto GK and find a decent howto online.

Well don't expect a "one-click" solution. Generally your solution works like this:

        Step 1: Decrypt/rip DVD.
Step 2: Strip out main movie.
Step 3: Convert main movie to DIVX.

Sadly, step 2 is usually a manual process, although modern products are pretty good at "guessing".

autoGK seems to work fine, but I could never figure out how to get subtitles to work. So whenever a movie includes passages in a foreign language with forced subtitles, I lose them. Sucks.

I use DVDshrink to make the dvd image smaller (reauthoring the dvd, ommitting soundtracks, extras and subtitles I don't need) when I need to take a dvd with me (on my laptop for instance).
But I don't think it can turn a dvd into a divx though...

Initial experimentation with the Fifth Element last night has turned up a pretty good looking avi with no problems.

this was with DVD Decrypter -> AutoGK

Obviously I was just being stupid every time I tried it before
