  • Tornado season starts...

Welcome to the American midwest in tornado season.

    >70 tornadoes in 1.5 days & Greenburg Kansas 90% flattened by a 3/4 - 1 mile wide "wedge" F4 - F5 with winds in the 200-300 mph (322 - 483 kp/h) range.

Saw an F5 in Texas once. It ripped up the concrete roadbed on both sides of a freeway....right down to the dirt.

Up-close Storm Chaser video of a small one....(30 sec ad first, sorry)

    Looks like a fun job

Largest tornado: Hallam, Nebraska, May 22, 2004 - 2.5 miles (4 km) wide

    Highest wind speed: Moore, Oaklahoma May 3, 1999 - ~318 mph (511.77 km/h)

Largest outbreak: April 3-4, 1974 - 148 tornadoes spanning Mississippi to Ontario, Canada

Had my grandparents calling today to see if we were safe. We figured they heard about Sweetwater, Oklahoma and thought they were hearing about here, Stillwater.

The Moore tornado (well tornados, as there was more than one) happened about a year after I moved here. We had water spouts quite often in Florida, but that tornado was like a concentrated version of so many hurricanes I'd seen.

    They're awesome to watch though.

We once saw nine small ones in a mile square field. Those were fun to watch. The one that took the roof off the apartment above me was too close.
