A new extra-solar planet has been found around the red dwarf Gliese 581, a star type that is extremely long lived, stable and the most common star type in the Galaxy.

It's the third rock out, in the stars habitable zone, 1.5x Earths diameter, 5x its mass and ~2x its gravity. In other words it could easily be a waterworld like Earth.

The best vacation destination outside of Sol needs a better name than Gliese 581 C. Pick one of my options or post your own :)

Ithaka...

cause it's a long way there and although we hope it will be like "home" we can't really tell until we get there.

edit: my second choice is "bob" :)

now come on guys, never learned anything after centuries of keeping colonies? you have to ask the guys living there what they call their place. anything else would be rude.

I considered Planet Lister but Planet Rimmer rolls off the tongue a little easier.

I voted for Bob.
Who wouldn't like an entire planet named after a drinking game (http://www.webtender.com/handbook/games/hibob.game)? ;)

When I saw the name "Bob" the first thing I thought of was Microsoft Bob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob).

Microsoft Bob was best used for playing Hi Bob alone.

It's gotta be Bob!

For those who are wondering where Bob comes from, see the movie Titan A.E., the last Don Bluth (Dragon's Lair, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, The Land Before Time, etc.) film, and possibly his best.

Gideon. (Dumbest Trek episode ever.) Or Vulcan.

Caladan. Or if we're not lucky, Giedi Prime.

Early Don Bluth: assistant animator on Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, Pete's Dragon, an animated segment of Xanadu then The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, All Dogs Go to Heaven etc etc
