Airbus details job cuts, 4,100 in France: report

PARIS (Reuters) - European planemaker Airbus (EAD.PA) (EAD.DE) has set out details of job reductions under its Power8 restructuring plan, including 4,100 job cuts in France, French newspaper Le Monde reported on Saturday.

The restructuring calls for 10,000 Europe-wide job cuts and six full or partial factory sales by 2010. The job losses are to be split between Airbus and suppliers.

Airbus told employees in a works council meeting on Friday that 2,305 posts would vanish at Airbus France production sites at Toulouse, southwestern France, and 964 jobs would disappear at the company's headquarters, also in Toulouse, Le Monde reported.

Due to the presence of the headquarters, the French city is the most affected by the restructuring, caused by a weak dollar and delays to the A380 superjumbo.

Hamburg in Germany will lose the biggest number of production jobs, with 2,317 posts affected, the reports said.

Elsewhere, 369 jobs will be cut in Saint-Nazaire and 295 at Nantes, both in western France, and 192 at Meaulte in the north.

In Britain, 1,095 jobs are going at Filton while 334 jobs are reported to be axed at Getafe in Spain.

Airbus was not available for comment.

Boeing to lay off 20,000 to 30,000

      Wednesday, September 19, 2001

By CHARLES POPE AND PAUL NYHAN
      SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTERS

Boeing announced Tuesday night that it will lay off 20,000 to 30,000 of its commercial airplane workers, potentially plunging the Washington state economy into its first recession in two decades.
Not nearly as bad as what Boeing did a few years ago!!!

I have worked closely with both companies and they are both very inefficient with vast vertical hierarchies and idiotic planning. I could cite many examples of stupidity in decisions in both Toulouse and Seattle.

However, the timing of these details (the decision to axe 10,000 jobs was announced 2 months ago), just "coincidentally" happening 1 week before a new French President is elected, is political. Both candidates have made promises re Airbus which neither will be able to implement but which will fool the French electorate, possibly more in favour of that arrogant little twerp Sarkozy.

You're not saying that Reuters is biased in timing this story are you? Or is it Airbus for releasing them? Who would it help in the election? I'm presuming the socialist....

          Airbus releasing them

It would help Sarkozy (ultra-conservative) more than Royal, as he has promised state funding to help Airbus. This would be against EU and WTO rules, but the electors won't see that. I personally find that he gets my back up every time he opens his mouth with his extreme-right tendencies. I mistrust all politicians but experience has taught me that the worst ones are those who are knee-high to a gr****opper as they inevitably have a chip on their shoulder.

OTOH, I'm not sure Royal would be any better. At least, she is more human but I'm not sure of her competence to lead a major country. As a person, I find her likeable, but...

Edit: why has grass-hopper (without the hyphen) been corrupted????
