saw a few films over the past week or two (been doing a lot of procrastinating lately) and thought i'd comment...

    ***warning: may contain spoilers!

    pan's labyrinth:
-it was ok, not great. definitely watchable. some minor plot holes and/or weaknesses that prevent it from true greatness. also, was kind of disappointed that all the fantasy visuals were revealed in the commercials.

    haven
-i saw a review on this from someone who saw it at a film festival and thought it was awesome, then heard it had been majorly re-edited before release. i have a feeling that the re-edit might have been a mistake. there were lots of story threads that didn't get tied up. another movie that just barely missed being great.

    alpha dog
my favourite dialog from the movie went like this:
"So, are we gonna take the kid home or what?"
    "What."
    "WHAT?"
    "That's right... What!"

I really like this movie in that it's based on a true story and I already knew how it was going to turn out yet the story was unfolded in such a way as to make me root for and almost believe in a happier ending.

    eragon
    crap.

    happy feet
stunning visuals. weak story. robbin williams made it watchable.

omg, omg, omg! if you haven't seen this movie yet, go now! truly, a great reboot of the franchise.

    flyboys
    surprisingly watchable. not great.

    funny money
had to stop watching after about 30 minutes. fletch it isn't.

    the departed
awesome. my friend who lives in hong kong told me that it's almost a complete scene by scene rip off of the chinese version so, as such, i'm not sure why it deserved an oscar for best director, but otherwise a great film. he told me that he had a good chuckle during the scene where they were selling the chips to the chinese gang guys. supposedly the chinese dialog was very awkward and it was funny to hear it spoken so passionately. he told me that people in the theatre in HK were laughing.

    borat
    funny. got great. but funny.

    stranger than fiction
a really nice movie. worth watching.

    the prestige
blah blah, tesla is great. the movie is not. very watchable though.

there's more but that's enough for now.

so what movies have you guys seen lately? anything good? anything bad? for those who saw them, what did you think of the movies i've mentioned?
    P.S. You've been Spanked!

Couple years old already but I must mention this as I don't think it got the reception it deserved:
The Brothers Grimm (Terry Gilliam dir.)
    Q9450 + TRUE, G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2, GTX 560, ASUS X48, 1TB WD Black, Windows 7 64-bit, LG M2762D-PM 27" + 17" LG 1752TX, Corsair HX620, Antec P182, Logitech G5 (Blue)
    Laptop: MSI Wind - Black

I remember not liking that movie. I remember falling asleep part way through, waking up sometime before the end, and not bothering to watch the bits I'd missed.

        Couldn't disagree more.

We had a video party the other night with a few other couples watching Prestige and Departed on a 1080 LCD. Both were extremely well received, with lots of positive discussion of Prestige's twists & turns.

With one borrowed deck we had a chance to compare HD DVD (Prestige - H.264 AVC) and BR (Departed - VC-1) side-by-side.

Both looked great, but most of us preferred the 'look' of H.264 AVC better. HD DVD definitely has the edge when it comes to advanced menuing features, which was expected.

IMO MPEG-2 is definitely in trouble.

I just thought the payoff was ridiculous. A little late in the game to be finding out that it's really a science fiction movie, no? Don't get me wrong, I like science fiction very much, but switching genres at the end was, to me, a cop out. I supposed you don't agree with me on this. So, if, in 300, they pull out light sabers, you'd be ok with that too, right?

I thought that "The Illusionist" was at least believable.

Anyone paying attention had to know by Tesla's presence in the previews that it would be a mix of illusion and sci-fi, and with that knowledge you also had to know Tesla was going to be a foil in their battle. Anything he could add to either illusionists act would have to be 'out there'.

(DAMN...it's hard not to include spoilers when talkimg about that flick)

i didn't see him in the previews, but even if i did, tesla was a scientist. he invented many real and useful things; even if i had seen him i wouldn't have inferred sci-fi.

Not even knowing his claims of death rays and other such things? That or that many of his papers are still classified? His works have appeared in SteamPunk and alt. tech sci-fi for ages.

The Illusionist was good. Not great. But good. The payoff was realistic at least.

The last movie I saw in the theatre was Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer.

Excellent movie. There's not a whole lot of action going on but I found it one of the most original movies I've seen in a long time.
The way it's filmed and the way they used sound I thought was fantastic.
                        I Highly recommend it.
