  • Enterprise, Alabama :(

Their high school was hit head-on by a tornado this afternoon. The roof collapsed just as they were getting ready to send them home early because of bad weather.

Witnesses say the tornado was 1/2 mile wide, making it a likely F4-F5.

Responders say it looks like it was hit by a bomb. Still too early to calculate casualties. Looks like more supercells nearing the area.

A 7 year old girl was killed by one in Missouri.

In total several hit in 6 southern states.

No, this isn't unusual. The 1-day record for tornado's in North America is 148 (confirmed; more seen) ranging from Texas to Ontario, Canada on April 3-4, 1974 including 7 F5's; >330 died. I remember seeing 3 that day within a very short period of time.

13 and counting just at the school, more statewide.

They were gathering the kids in the gym to send them home when the tornado hit it dead-bang. 40 taken to the ER so far. They're still digging people out.

Power and cells out throughout the area. More supercells moving in.

Alabama's Governor has declared a disaster and sent in the Alabama National Guard (State military units) to help organize things and provide security and logistics.

Bush advised, likely to name at least Alabama and Missouri Federal disaster areas so they can move in Federal resources.

              NOT funny.

BTW: FEMA arrived before sunup today & started coordinating with the Salvation Army, Red Cross and the National Guard.
