  • network layout

    Hello,

I asked about this before, but now my parents are finally going to go for broadband internet and a network at home. This is the situation:
    1. cable modem in the garage
    2. computer on first floor
    3. digibox (digital TV) on ground floor (has UTP)
    4. TV on ground floor (has UTP to display photos from a networked PC)
    5. probabely addition of a VOIP phone to the network

Currently, the digibox is connected with the modem using ethernet-over-power adapters. I tested with my own wireless router and laptop to see how good the reception is in the different rooms, and it is just fine througout the house.

So here is the layout I'm suggesting:
    1. add wireless router (802.11g) in the garage
    2. add a wireless bridge for the TV
    3. keep the ethernet-over-power for digibox (slow, but not much traffic needed)
    4. add something for the computer.

And this is the question: the computer is an old PentiumII that lacks USB 2.0. The possibilities for adding a wifi adapter are: USB, PCI or bridge (it has ethernet). I'm thinking of just going PCI (USB will be a bottlneck), but a bridge might offer more options in the future.

I first thought of going the 802.11a route, but there aren't bridges available (here)... ; same for 802.11n (only routers, no bridges).

    Any suggestions/comments?
