Interesting....

Panasonic however has a laptop where the optical drive is a top loader (located in front of the keyboard). I wonder if this is not the better option (or perhaps even under the keyboard...?).

This almost feels like old news now

Apple files a good number of patents that never become a reality in their products; however, if this is something they do plan on implementing it will likely be in an ultra-thin/light MacBook (opposed to in the current models).

Agree with VJ that the placement seems less-than-optimal compared to a top-loading drive placed in-front or underneath the keyboard. Still, it's not an entirely flawed concept as there is some demand within the Mac crowd for a lighter and/or thinner notebook option, but I can't help but feel it's a "just in case, while we explore other options" filing for Apple.
