    Zoo celebrates virgin Komodo birth

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- A British zoo on Wednesday announced the virgin birth of five Komodo dragons, giving scientists new hope for the captive breeding of the endangered species.

In an evolutionary twist, the newborns' 8-year-old mother, Flora, shocked staff at Chester Zoo in northern England when she became pregnant without ever having a male partner or even being exposed to the opposite sex.

"Flora is oblivious to the excitement she has caused but we are delighted to say she is now a mum and dad," said a delighted Kevin Buley, the zoo's curator of lower vertebrates and invertebrates.

"When the first of the babies hatched, we didn't know whether to make her a cup of tea or pass her the cigars."

This sounds like the opening of a bad B movie about rampaging komodos.....

wasnt there a movie kalled Komodo some years ago?
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

this mthod of asexual reproduction is veryintresting

There was an article on this in scientific american last month.

Apparently, Dragons (along with many lizzards) have their sexual chromazones reversed - instead of xy for male, males are XX.....

A cellular component of a cell is a organellle called the polar body. This contains a copy of the half chromazone set of the normal cell nucleus.(the same copy as the nucleus of the zygote cell (which is important (later)....

In normal sexual reproduction, the polar body plays no part in the genetic inheritance cycle....

If a FEMALE happened to wash ashore on a new island from a storm or such ( they can swim , but not very far) the female will wait for several years to find a male. If none turns up, it can reproduce asexually, by utilising the polar body as an active chromazone set.

(several lizzards can do this trick)

All the offspring will be male, as the XX defines the male sexual role in this class of lizard (dunno about all lizards!).

The sons are then available to 'do the dirdy' with mom after they reach maturity - starting a new colony of K dragons.

Unfortunately..... (and there is always a catch!)
Becasue the polar body is a copy of the chromazone in the nucleus of the egg, all offspring will (as well as being male), contain only 1/4 of the boidiversity of the parent. (the offspring wont necessarially be identical, remember).....

Then as the sons mate with their mothers, further inbreeding will arise, reducing the biodiversity further.....

All in all, it not a sucessful plan - but it can (perhaps) work in extremis!
Dont just swallow the blue pill.
