Abbé Pierre was one of the most remarkable men of the 20th century and the epitome of a true Christian, even if he was liberal towards the strict dogmas of hard-line Catholicism. I have known of his good works for decades and often supported the Emmaus foundation near Lausanne. I saw him live on the Swiss television just about six weeks ago, very obviously a frail man, but still sparking fire about the plight of the "have-nots". The world will be a poorer place without him, who gave his all for humanity; if all priests were like him, the Roman Catholic Church would be much richer in spirituality and poorer in worldly wealth. And I say this as a non-Catholic.

France will honour this great man on Friday by a National Funeral at Notre Dame, with many dignitaries present, including Chirac.

In French, also http://www.tsr.ch/tsr/index.html?sit...01&sid=7454699, the Swiss Television states that the President of the Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, honoured his memory, «un personnage extraordinaire ... De toutes les batailles depuis 1954, l'abbé Pierre m'a beaucoup impressionné par la continuité de son engagement», "An extraordinary personality ... Of all the battles since 1954, Abbé Pierre much impressed me by the continuity of his fight."
