  • my computer misbehaving now

Now all of a sudden, I power it on, then three seconds later it power off again.

Everything including fans seem to be fine, it's just not powering up to the OS.

What could be the problem? Power supply? memory? video card?

    It's an old P4 2.4Ghz system that I use for e-mail etc.

    Thanks,
    Elie

I always start with checking the Power Supply first.

          1 check PSU
          2 check mem
3 disconnect FDD and HDD and repeat step 1 & 2
          4 check CPU
          5 check VPU

my friend had the same issue 3 weeks back with his fileserver box. i asked if i could take a look since he had gotten himself riled up and frustrated. 1mins later i had disconnected the FDD and the server was back.

Does it actually try and boot or fails at the Bios screen or just after the Bios tests.

                Thanks guys!!

@ Pit: it powers up, you can here everything start up including HDD's lights everything, then 3 -4 seconds later it powers back off again.

You know... it could be the power on button getting stuck, usually with ATX power supplies if you hold the power button for aprox 4-5 seconds it powers off the PSU. So maybe that's what's going on here, hmmmmm...

I'll check that too, as I was using this PC perfectly fine two days ago!

                Cheers,
                Elie

                  Problem solved

It was the power button as I suspected, I switched it with the reset button which I will use to power on the system.

                  Cheers,
                  Elie
