  • SSD for the masses ... soon(TM)

It looks like RiDATA is spoiling every elses high price SSD party.

$170 for a 16 GB SDD (enough for OS and apps in a ultra silent PC or ultra portable laptop/tablet/umpc), with a 32 GB drive announced (no price listed) and a 64 GB drive later this year. Even if the 32 GB drive is twice the price ($340), that's still $260 less than SanDisk's announced price.

Reports from CES have been saying that the latest gen of SDD have been booting laptops in half the time due to recent speed advances in NAND flash. Once capacity goes up and prices go down I can see this being a very big thing. Store the bulk of your data on a NAS/server (suddenly Windows Home Server doesn't seem so silly) sitting in a closet or garage, linked across a Gb network and run your PC silently with a SDD and one or two very silent fans. That would be very nice. I might have to work that out next time I upgrade. By then they'll have 256 GB SDDs for under $500, though.

Sweet! Anything to drive the prices down. SSD is the future imo!
