  • Red Laser DVDs: 100GB Capacity?

Ritek have announced it has acquired a technology transfer concerning near-field recording (NFR) for DVDs from the Center for Nanostorage Research (CNR) of the National Taiwan University (NTU) that could lead to red-laser NFR DVD discs with a storage capacity as large as 100GB.

Read another article somewhere about another tech that uses nano-pits cut with a UV laser to burn 5 terabyte discs the same size as current CD/DVD's.

Yawn, 500GB hard drives with a 5-yr warranty are regularly on sale here for $169. I'm very less than impressed the the "archival" properties of burned CD and DVD media.

Optical media has been promising far more that it actually delivers since day one. Believe it when you see it.

Agreed to a point, which is why my video projects for others are archived to HDD's and put in a vault. I do, however, do my OS backups to both HDD and DVD-RAM (backup copies).
