  • You write like a girl.

Badass...gender text genie This thing is dead accurate for me so far. Basically what it does is analyzes the text you paste into it and determines whether a male or female wrote that text. Impressive.

(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

    Female Score: 262
    Male Score: 814

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

I have put in 3 samples so far. Two were dominate male, and the third was female. In that case it was good since it was a story I wrote for a critique group where I was challenged to write a story with a female protagonist. Pretty cool!

...though this should probably be in The Lounge. Would you like me to move it?

Interesting I tried five things that I've written.

A CV which it thought was female.

A piss take of a football manager that it thought was male

A couple of poems which it thought was male.

A piss take of female drivers which it thought was female.

Pfeh. I wrote half a dozen things "off the cuff" and it couldn't tell what the hell I was.

I'm discovering that the more abstract and flowery the text, the more "female" its findings.

Just for fun, I plugged in some excerpts from famous authors. Let's see how they scored!

Male Authors it seems to have some trouble with:

William Gibson, "Neuromancer", same excerpt I posted the other day:
            Female Score: 219
            Male Score: 201

But, if I lengthen the excerpt to include the next paragraph, which is heavy on the swears and includes some male characters... it JUMPS in the other direction:
            Female Score: 556
            Male Score: 907

Ernest Hemingway, "A Farewell to Arms":
            Link

            Female Score: 1008
            Male Score: 760

J.D. Salinger, "The Catcher In The Rye":
            Link

            Female Score: 2908
            Male Score: 2687

Now let's see how it does with FEMALE authors. A little better, but apparently these ladies are only MARGINALLY female:

            Ayn Rand, "Atlas Shrugged":
            Link

            Female Score: 3573
            Male Score: 3084

            Sylvia Plath, "The Bell Jar":
            Link

            Female Score: 2723
            Male Score: 1944

Maya Angelou, "I Know Why Caged Birds Sing":
            Link

            Female Score: 2667
            Male Score: 2443

MUSIC... It doesn't do so well with!

POISON, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn":
            Link

            Female Score: 222
            Male Score: 136

GUNS 'N' ROSES, "It's So Easy":
            Link

            Female Score: 495
            Male Score: 342

Natalie Imbruglia, "Torn" (Yes, bring on the video... freaks...)
            Link

            Female Score: 291
            Male Score: 522

Cheryl Crow, "All I Wanna Do":
            Link

            Female Score: 387
            Male Score: 627

            Bloodhound Gang, "The Bad Touch":
            Link

            Female Score: 427
            Male Score: 277

            ----------------------

Now let's jump back in time. The immortal bard himself:

            William Shakespeare, "Love's Labours Lost"
(Note, the full text of this play killed the genie. This score is for the first half of the play...)

            Female Score: 12715
            Male Score: 11856

            Geoffrey Chaucer, "Canterbury Tales"
(A reasonable length of "The Knight's Tale")

            Female Score: 1065
            Male Score: 754

I guess those were hard because of all the funny words, right? *snicker*

            Let's try something more recent:

            J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit":
(Chapter 1 - "An Unexpected Party")

            Female Score: 7059
            Male Score: 7492

Ol' JRR is, apparently, male. Barely. Or is he?
            Let's try LOTR:
            (Chapter 1 - "A Long Expected Parting")

            Female Score: 1646
            Male Score: 2041

            -------------------------

My conclusion? This thing is crap. Utter crap. Using definite articles ("the", "a") apparently earns you MALE points, while using personal pronouns ("her", "hers") makes you FEMALE. "Around" is male, "with" is female? WTF?

I tried it with part of the introduction of my phd-text.
              Words: 680
              Female Score: 776
              Male Score: 1095
Does it only base this on the occurences of specfic words?
