Som more info:
PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities say three of the four members of a San Francisco family that disappeared during a family vacation in Oregon more than a week ago were found alive today.
Kati Kim and her two young daughters were found in the family's car, but Kim's husband, James, was not with them. He reportedly put on snowshoes and hiked out to go for help.
Kati Kim and the children were airlifted from the scene to a hospital.
There was no immediate word on their condition or how the family got stranded.
The family was seen at a restaurant in Roseburg, Oregon on November 25th, when they were about to set off on drive of about 135 miles to the Gold Beach area.
The family's cell phone triggered a ping on a cell tower near Glendale the next day, making it the last registered sign of them until today.Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I'm suspecting this may have been an example of "following the GPS to their doom." If I set a route from Roseburg to Gold Beach using "shortest distance" calculation and don't filter out dirt roads, I get a route that takes I-5 south out of Roseburg, just past Glendale, and then west out of Wolf Creek along some road that looks like it would be a really neat drive in the summer, but probably would be a rather bad idea in the winter.
Just checked some Portland news stations and, indeed, that was the road they were found on.Last edited by Jon P. Inghram; 4 December 2006, 17:38.

Several years ago my bro and I went to do some hiking along the Rouge River (Gold Beach is on the ocean end of the river) at the end of March. Most everywhere was sunny and warm but we ran into one road that was completely snowed in. It is very deceiving driving around there and add in what Jon said and for out of towners I can imagine how this can easily happen.
News reports say the 3 are in good condition. They burned their tires for heat and the husband tested berries for them before he left.Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra 9, Opteron 170 Denmark 2x2Ghz, 2 GB Corsair XMS, Gigabyte 6600, Gentoo Linux

Just heard on the local NPR station that the mom and kids were found by a text message sent to their phone on Sunday. The local cell phone company looked through their logs for the Kims' cell number and found a single message to them. They then were able to locate the sector that the car was eventually found.
As for the dad they found the outer layer of his pants along the Rouge River. Apparently one of the signs of hypothermia is a false sense of warmth and sufferers have a tendancy to remove clothes.Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra 9, Opteron 170 Denmark 2x2Ghz, 2 GB Corsair XMS, Gigabyte 6600, Gentoo Linux

Damn, that sucks.Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox

Sad indeed. Terrible in fact.
He violated rule #1 - in an emergency don't leave your shelter.
Start a signal fire, spell out S-O-S in footprints, rocks, boughs or logs....anything but leave your shelter.
Personally I'd have used the snow to build an igloo. Takes an hour or so, is warmed to above freezing from body heat alone, can withstand wicked storms & stop winds flat.
We used them a lot when far enough from hunting base camp that staying overnight was the safest option. Even have a folding snow block mold that fits in a backpack. Set its telescoping pole to the desired radius and it not only molds the blocks in place but aligns them.
IMO if you have snow enough to build one they're better than tents.Last edited by Dr Mordrid; 6 December 2006, 18:18.Dr. Mordrid

It started as a little mistake as the Kim family missed a freeway turnoff while driving home to San Francisco from a Thanksgiving vacation, then decided to take a one-lane road through snowy mountains rather than doubling back to the main highway.After leaving the freeway, the Kims drove past a gas station, pizza parlor and coffee shop. On the way they passed at least three yellow signs warning that Bear Camp Road to Agnes and Gold Beach might be blocked by snowdrifts.Driving higher through the snow in their all-wheel-drive silver Saab station wagon, the Kims came to a fork. A fourth yellow sign warned of snowdrifts blocking the way if they took the left fork to Gold Beach. They took the right fork, not knowing where it went.Kati Kim told searchers they got stuck in snow once, managed to get turned around, then decided to stay put because they were low on gas.
Wow...

Sounds like they were somewhat over-confident in their vehicle.
edit If it was anything like the 9-5 SportCombi on Saab's website no wonder they ran into trouble. Check out that ground clearance!

@KRSESQ
WHAT ground clearance?? I think these pseudo-RV's are a bad idea just because of the false sense of security they instill in the inexperienced.
@Jessterw
Total lack of common sense indeed.Dr. Mordrid
