  • Veterans Day

Just a note to honor our veterans; past, current and future, for their service. Extra points for the Special Forces & Marines; the 'tip of the spear'.

We should take these days to honour not just our respective own, but all veterans. We also shouldn't forget the families of those who have served, because they get far less recognition for their part than they deserve.

We recently also honored a polish veteran: Jan Sobieski. We drank to him

We call it Rememberance Day up here. It's something we've always celebrated in school too, we make poppies and someone gets the honor of reading John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields.

n Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
              In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
              In Flanders fields.
              Titanium is the new bling!

There's a hotel named after him, and I've seen beer mugs with his picture on them. Then there's his supposed favorite beer, Hevelius...

That's about all I know and that all came from my Polish-American mother-in-law. So, dunno.

                          yep.. from IMDB:

Her father is a descendant of Jan III Sobieski, king of Poland between 1674 and 1696. He has a title that he does not use.

She's an indirect descendant; there are no direct ones anymore.
