  • beating a dead horse: msi 745 ultra & barton?

    hi guys,

if I remember correctly, there were a few owners of the msi 745 mainboard here. has anyone ever tried using a barton (fsb 166) cpu? officially it's not supported, and what I find on the net is, well, contradicting.

    thanks,
    wulfman

Right after first bootup it will probably just work slower, with lower fsb...

I couldent get it to work, no post no boot, just fans spinning up and nothing from the mobo...

My MSI 745 Ultra ran a Barton Athlon XP Mobile just fine...

No wait, I had upgraded to a 748 by then... sorry, can't say!

Oh, and anyway...what do you mean by "dead horse"? :/ (still on AXP 1700+ generally, though for one more day on p2 266...)

yeah, same here - msi 745 & Xp 1700, slightly overclocked. but I had to deal with some special programs recently wish refused to run smoothly with the current setup. bumping up the speed a little bit might just be enough...

                  That's exactly what I did. http://forums.murc.ws/showthread.php?t=41237

Also, what REV of the board do you have?
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

a 266 bus barton will work, just not 333 bus
pricewatch has good deals still on them
