  • S3 to Buy Diamond Multimedia - Whodathunkit?

You got it right. Check out this link - http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/f_headline.cgi?day0/191730048&ticker=dimd|siii

Seems that the number of "independent" graphics card mfg's (i.e. those that don't manufacture their own chips) is dwindling fast. Matrox and ATi have long made their own chips and cards. 3dfx bought STB (making STB snub their nose to Nvidia).

Looks like Diamond will be snubbing Nvidia and 3DLabs. 3DLabs seems to be o.k. since they make their own high end OpenGL cards. That leaves Nvidia to decide who they'll buy...

Or maybe nVidia will be bought out by a bigger fish, say maybe...Creative Labs. Let's face it, there are really no good card builder left so the only solution left is for Creative to buy nVidia. That would fun.

I think DMM sux, and so does S3. Together they should suck doubly as much

BTW - Matrox designs their own chips, and assemble their own boards, but it has always been NEC who actually fabs the chips for Matrox...
