  • PCI-E x16 "Graphics" for non-graphics usage

    Hi all,

Hopefully just a quickie - a lot of motherboards advertise PCI-E x16 for graphics usage, but I am planning to buy a PCI-E x8 RAID card. Can I use the x16 slot for this?

As background, I'm planning as lower power a setup as possible (the many drives will offset this somewhat I guess), so an Asus N4L-VM i945G S479 with a Yonah T2400 is currently favourite, with SATA RAID being provided by an Areca card.
    ASUS N4L-VM DH i945G, S479, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 667, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX
    1 x PCI-Express (x1)
    1 x PCI-Express (x16 Graphics)
    Thanks in advance...

yes; if you have an alternative method for video (ie: intergrated gfx or PCI).

PCI-e is compatible downwards through all it's variation. So a 16x slot can hold an 8x, 4x, or 1x card as well as 16x. Additionally, with SLi or Crossfire motherboards, the second 16x slot typically runs at 8x max.

    Hope that helps.
