  • Topic: a quick way to combine separate mpgs?

I have four 3 minute mpgs I want to combine into one mpg, what is the quickest way to construct such a single file (without losing quality)? Do I need to convert it to an avi? I have virtual dub and avi_io...do I need a full nle program?
    regards

Oddly enough, you can usually use the DOS Copy command
    EG:
    copy /b file1.mpg + file2.mpg + file3.mpg + file4.mpg final.mpg

I tried your suggestion, and the file insreased to about the size it should be if it was combined...but when I play it, only the first mpg shows...but not the other 2.

      bummer

Did you put the "/b" in?

          Hello,

Have you tried TMPGEnc's MPEG tools? That has the ability to join multiple MPEG files.

Well the DOS copy way is definitely NOT the way to go, although SOME players do play the entire file afterwards.

Go with "Peck's Power Join" or iFilmEdit, I have had very good results with both of them (the latter one being my favorite).

Then you should be able to get COMPLIANT mpg's which plays on ALL players.

Oh, forgot to mention - Both programs do NOT re-encode to join the files.

As I always say: You can get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than you can with just a kind word.

I like Ghydda's answer better than my own.
Mine was more of a desperation/simplicity thing.

PS I only ever use MS Media Player to play MPEGs.

                Hi dancray,

I think the best way to join MPEGs is with ifilmEdit. You get a perfect join without recompression. I have used almost every joiner there is out there with inferiour results.

Yeah I'd have to agree with iFilm Edit - it's probably the best choice for MPEG1 files. For MPEG1&2 I've always got on well with Vtec Video Clip MPEG2 SE (come with DVD Toolbox) or Vitec Video Clip MPEG2 Pro.
