Sources: Arrest made in JonBenet Ramsey case

    Wednesday, August 16, 2006; Posted: 5:08 p.m. EDT (21:08 GMT)

(CNN) -- Authorities have arrested a "possible suspect" in the decade-old JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation, law enforcement sources told CNN on Wednesday.

An investigator with the Boulder County, Colorado, District Attorney's office traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, and is bringing a suspect back to the United States, CNN Denver affiliate KUSA reported.

The suspect was arrested Wednesday morning and has confessed to certain elements of the crime that are unknown to the general public, KUSA reported.

The man already was already held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges, sources told The Associated Press.

Prosecutors have not confirmed the identity of the suspect, but expect to hold a press conference later today.

JonBenet's beaten and strangled body was found in the basement of the family home in Boulder, Colorado, the day after Christmas in 1996. She was 6.
Her father gave an interview a few minutes ago and stated that he and his wife were notified of the investigation pointing at this man before she died of cancer.

Yes, Colorado has the death penalty but that could have been taken off the table to get a confession.

I guess the authorities & the DA's instict for the 1st 7 years or so were wrong:-) I hope they at least gave an apology to the parents for all the grief they caused them.

Mom died a few months ago but got the word when the investigation turned.

One of the turning points was that this guy was sending the mom emails with info only someone involved would know about the case. John Karr is the slimeball. He's a former teacher.

I dunno this whole thing kind of sounds fishy to me....
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

The guy they picked up is a known pedophile/former teacher that lived near their Georgia home (they had homes in Colorado, Michigan and Georgia). They also found signs of forced entry in one of the basement windows and male DNA (not from semen but blood) on the girls panties. Tests will tell if it's his.

          So what's fishy?

Even here close to the action, a lot of the locals are skeptical. It's hard to separate the rumor from fact, but Karr's supposedly confessed to parts of the crime that never happened, and other people claim to have been with him the night that it happened.

It's too cloudy to tell if he's the guy or not. I hope the rumors settle down soon.

              Interesting....

In a yearbook Karr once signed his note ended "I Shall Be The Conqueror"

JonBenet's ransom note was signed "S.B.T.C."

              Time for the handwriting experts....

              also;

BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) -- John Mark Karr gave authorities graphic details about the condition of JonBenet Ramsey's body that have been kept secret for nearly a decade, a U.S. law enforcement source told CNN on Friday.
              .
Those details were known only to the medical examiner and the investigators investigating the December 26, 1996 slaying of the 6-year-old beauty pageant competitor, the law enforcement official said.
              .
Some of the details Karr shared were gruesome -- and accurate -- the source said.

                Handwriting?
I thought they had DNA samples.

He is known to have done extensive research on the case, so he might have learned those details second hand. It's hard to believe that after 10 years none of that would have leaked out at all.
He is sounding flakier and flakier.

Though, he sure fits the profile one would expect.

In the words of a friend:

As one "expert" put it in an interview this morning...if this guy killed her, he had to, first, even know that the little girl existed, then he had to find out where she lived, get to Colorado, to a place he doesn't ever seem to have been, he then had to break into the house, get the girl alone, in a room in the basement that no one seemed to know was there, then he had to rape her, (ick) kill her, (ick) then he had to find a pen and paper in the house (the note was written on materials from the home) sit down and write a THREE PAGE (longest ransom note in FBI history BTW) note that demanded $118,000.00 (incidentally the exact amount of her father's bonus that year) from her parents for her return, then he had to, after all that time, escape without anyone seeing him. On top of that, he had to use tape that somehow got her fibers from the girls mother's clothing stuck on it....

...the case would seem, on the surface, to require someone with a lot more knowledge of the family and their home then this guy could have had.

Maybe this is the guy, but I sure hope he gets a fair trial.

Plus, I'm starting to wonder why we haven't heard anything regarding the DNA tests yet. They swabbed him back in Thailand, right?

Yesterday, and it takes 3-5 days. Good for large samples like blood draws or swabs. A more sensitive test can take weeks to amplify small samples as from evidence.

Yeah I'm still super leery of this. I mean, the ANCILLARY facets of the case - the ransom amount, the fiber evidence - all implicate the parents or someone extremely intimate with the family. I'm not saying this can't be the guy, but just knowing how the body was mutilated doesn't make him the killer.

I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
                      I would still get screwed

Well they've said from damn near the beggining that while he seemed to have knowledge of facts that were not publicised, he also didn't have the facts straight on some more telling evidence.

He's a disturbed individual for sure, but I've been thinking it has more to do with being obsessed with the case and, possibly, Jon Benet herself than having any direct involvement. Individuals like this have the potential to assume a role that wasn't theirs just so they can be involved and/or have some sort of stage in the public eye as a result.

so lets get this strait. first this guy has an alibi then DNA doesn't match... so he confessed to something he didn't do? why? he's still gonna be charge for child porn.

what did this guy think? that if he confessed to killing JB and be found innocent that they'd drop the other charges? all or nothing?

...I'd want to play poker with this guy if he wasn't so far below me on the low life ladder.

He didn't think any of those things.
He's crazy, he probably thinks he did do it.
