Wireless Network List empty

I have a sony VAIO with wifi adator which will show wireless networks in range and even connect to them, however nothing shows up in the wireless networks list. I can't even set up a preffered network list. It also connects to the neighbors very low signal router in prefence to mine. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

is your ssid hidden and have you got encryption enabled on your router?

No. SSID is broadcasting and no security is setup. Also its not just my network that does not show. No network shows at all even though I can pick them up and surf online. I just have no control over which network is active.

Is Windows managing the network list or is it handled by another program???
