  • Permian-Triassic extinction: crater found

    The Permian-Triassic extinction was 250 million years ago and the biggest mass extinction in known history. This extinction set up the conditions for the rise of the dinosaurs. The crater is the size of the state of Ohio and located in the Wilkes Land region of East Antarctica, south of Australia;

    An apparent crater as big as Ohio has been found in Antarctica. Scientists think it was carved by a space rock that caused the greatest mass extinction on Earth, 250 million years ago.

    The circle labeled "Chicxulub" is for comparison to the crater in Mexico that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.
