  • Weird IE and Office XP drop down problem.

Someone (Henry) that I know is having a few seemingly related interface problems on his XPsP2/OfficeXP system.
    • Selecting the I.E. drop down from the address bar hangs the instance of internet explorer.
    • Click on File->Save in I.E. hangs the I.E. window.
    • Attempting to use File->Save or File->load in Office XP hangs Office XP.
    • He can no longer type an address into the I.E. address bar without typing the http:// prefix.

Things I tried that did not work:
    • Repairing Office XP.
    • Ripping out Office XP and reinstalling.
    • Reinstalling XPSP2.

It was getting too late to stay and work on it but other things I am thinking about are:
    • Reinstalling Windows XP itself.
    • Maybe it some sort of Windows API that got corrupted or blocked.
    • Perhaps something integrated/infested I.E./WIndows Explorer and got corrupted and affected these parts of the O.S.

    Any ideas?

Have you checked for spyware/malware? Could also be a corrupt history folder try cleaning the cache etc.

Maybe patch problem but my favorite would be spyware from browsing porn and illegal fileshare sites with IE.

That's what I would think but nothing besides some tracking cookies was found. I forgot to mention that. I am sending him an email with steps and to call me.
