You know the first rule, right?

(Hint: It starts with "send your old parts" and ends with "to Gurm"!)

Or should I get this CPU?

And if I did, would it require registered RAM?

People seem to be fapping over the UPMW stepping of the Opteron 165..for $330, this is very tempting.

          BAM:

"Another really important reason why we got so much interested in taking a closer look at Opteron 165 is the fact that it is very much different from the majority of Opteron CPUs from other families: Opteron 165 can work just fine in a regular desktop platform. Firstly, this processor is compatible with Socket 939 infrastructure, and secondly, it supports regular non-Registered DDR SDRAM. In other words, AMD Opteron 165 can be installed into regular Socket 939 mainboards without any incompatibility threats."

Socket 939, 1 MB cache, overclockable beyond belief from what the reports say. $328 + shipping.

            Only $30 more than the X2 3800+.

If i din't already have sufficient power, i would highly consider an Opteron 165, they look to be a sweet deal from what i've read on the Web. very overclockable in general, but as always, no guarantees.

If I was to buy a case, it would be the Antec P180 : http://www.silentpcreview.com/article249-page1.html

I hear good things about that case, but the Tsunami is just so damned perdy.

not so sure about the cpu heatsink, i would probably lean towards a Thermalright XP120 if it fits the budget

edit: BIG TYPHOON does not sound quiet even though it is rated as such and 1300rpm? I wouldn't trust my $$ cpu to that - especially if overclocking

It gets rave reviews. I'll trust my CPU to that.

Nah, I've waited too long (1.6Ghz Athlon) to wait another 6 months for an upgrade.
