      Thank you.
Forgot to add "Ram installed 256Mb PC133"

My old Acer P100 40mg ram captured better than this new machine. I was able to capture 352x288 1/4 Pal without any drops.
This new beuat unit actually drops at this size as well.
      I feel desperation creeping in.
      Thanks in advance

        Hi,
you said that your m/b is based on i815 chipset and your O.S is win98 SE, in this case has your hardware been identified correctly by the OS ? In most cases you need to run the update infs from Intel (both for chipsets and ATA controllers) in order to have your hardware correctly identified and configured.
For the latest updates for these infs have a look at intel's support site.
        http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/Fi...179&page_nbr=2
If everything was functioning OK you should have the DMA checkbox (for the HD) available.
For DMA transfers to work properly the DMA option must be enabled on both BIOS and Operating System.
Just for the record, i have a maxtor Dmax 40+ 30Gb on a promise Ultra66 controller and the maxtor hd benchmark gives me something between 14.5 to 17 Mb/sec (cpu is PII 350 overclocked to 466 ).

          Thanks again
Does this mean a HDD controller card is necessary ie. scsi or other type.
I am currently set on M/bd connectors.
          Thanks again

You shouldn't need to consider SCSI or RAID unless you are going down the raw (uncompressed) capture route. I haven't messed around with HD settings too much under W98, so apart from telling you that I can capture full frame without problems with a G400MArvel onto a 20Gb Fuji based in a Gigabyte GA6BXE/Celeron300a combination, I've got no concrete suggestions.

I do know that I had a very entertaining month trying to up my HD ratings under W95 and an AMDK6-2 setup. In the end it turned out that the ATA drivers supplied by AMD were magnitudes worse than the W95OSR2 generic drivers, so I used the latter happily for a considerable time.

A query to Seagate help yeilded a reply that linked to M/s product support.re a Esdi_506.pdf file.
Microsoft say The DMA check box is a function of this file.
Find file showed I have two of these files (1) In C:\windows\system\iosubsystem
              (2) In HP CD Writer Plus folder.
              but no DMA check box.
Previously with burner softwear conflicts I have had to rename various files in (1) so Nero would run whilst Adeptec was on the system.
Is someone with a DMA check box able to tell me where that file is located on their system.
              Thanks

                Hi Clem,

That file is a document file. I think that the file you are looking for is a ESDI_506.pdr.

                  Thanks Paul (just a typo)
Took my box back and discussed all this with the vendor (they didn't respond to my email)
Beleive it or not it seems there was a problem in my BIOS.
                  RRS benchmark's now
                  C: 21+mbps
                  D: 17+mbps
Also the m/board apparently does not support DMA check box
I learnt a bit on this one
                  Thanks to all who helped
Now onto all the other issues.
