  • First HD-DVD drive review

c't Magazin, who've done the first ever review of a Blu-Ray burner (see my post in GHW/SW), have posted the world's first review of a HD-DVD drive. It has no recording capacity whatsoever. It's an engineering sample, and like the Samsung Blu-Ray recorder, hasn't implemented AACS yet. Reading performance, error correction, noise and reading of copy protected audio CDs so far are not as good as the Blu-Ray's performance, though both are of course not retail units. The NEC HR-1100A will be available in Germany from April for 400 EUR. A recorder will follow for the same price in July.

MSI will release a Radeon X1000 card that can do HDCP over DVI. This needs a special card BIOS and a special chip on the card, so current cards can't be upgraded with a BIOS update.
