  • IKEA coming to our area....

They're starting construction on a new 410,000+ sq. ft. (!! !!) IKEA furniture store in Canton, MI...about 15 miles from here....in June '06.

I've heard of this store but never been to one. Anyone have personal experience, other than to take some Prozac so as to tolerate the crowds?

    /me hates Ikea.
Low quality, cheap prices, kind of Wallmart for furniture.

But OTOH few gadgets/ideas/things are nice...and I like their minimalistic style.

I have bought alot of stuff from Ikea.. they do have some cheap crap, true, but when you pay $40CDN for a dining room table, really did you expect Oak with all the trimmings?
They do have more expensive stuff too. I for one really like the kitchen cabinets, which I find to be head and shoulder above the mills pride crap they sell at home depot for 1.5x the price.
as for the crowds, if you never had one around, chances are it will be crowded for the first while, after that, then only bad on the weekend.
Also they claim to make furniture out of managed forests, as in they keep planting new trees to replace the ones they harvested. Overall good I find, and the greater Toronto area now has 4 of them.

good starter furniture, and kids furniture.
Used to go there more often till we moved far enough away that the drive didn't justify it.

I'm with tjalfe on this one. If you avoid the really cheap stuff, it's actually pretty good. About half of all our furniture is from Ikea, and it's holding up really well.

I'm most impressed with my desk. It's about 4'x6' and L shaped, and the steel frame that holds it together is amazingly sturdy. I have two large monitors on it, as well as all my other junk, and I can stand right in the middle of it (all 230lbs of me) and it still doesn't even creak. It was a little expensive, but worth every penny.

Nope. It's the Effectiv T. I don't think they sell it anymore. The only Effectiv products they have now are the file cabinet things. Too bad.

Yeah, but that Effectiv T stuff was way pricier than the other stuff: it competed with office furniture (and did a hell of a good job at that as well). IMO, IKEA is great for starters upto a certain level. You get what you pay for, a bit more compared to anything I've seen elsewhere. Some series in a bit pricier range can be really good though.

I got my desk from an office supply store's second hand outlet. It's a massively strong 66"x30" plain mahogany finished desk with just the shallow drawer in the middle. Got to pick from about 30 of them and found the one in best shape. $35.00. I have my 90lb monitor, a 70lb and 40lb computers on it, along with a bunch of other junk. Second- hand furniture can be a real bargain. Of course, this does not usually apply to cloth covered chairs.
