  • Ordered new computer

    Hi!

I ordered a new computer 5 minutes ago.

    Here's what I ordered:
    Asus A8N-E motherboard
    Asus 7800GT graphics card
    AMD X2 3800 cpu
    Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2 2x512Mb ram
    Seagate 7200.8 250GB hard drive

It's supposed to work as an entertainment and gaming computer.
I could not resist a dual core cpu.

What do you think? Will it work with my 355W Enermax power supply?

    /Leo
    AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+
    Asus A8N-E
    Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2
    Asus Extreme GeForce N7800GT
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB
    Lian-Li PC60
    Windows XP Pro 64bit

I'd say yes provided that the supply has a ATX12V 4 pin connector. You'll have to add up how much current the supply says it will put out on each rail and how much current the 7800 and the cpu requires on each rail.

It does have some kind of 4 pin connector which I currently do not use. It is also marked with 12V so I guess it is that connector you are reffering to. What do you think of the setup otherwise?

Sounds like a nice system. I think you should be good as far as power goes. AMD says 89W for the 3800 but I'm not sure if this is full load. According to some reviews the 7800gt will consume a couple hundred watts at full load, but I'd give it a shot anyway. According to Nvidia's FAQs they only recommend 350W. I'd give it a shot.

Well the psu costed about 120$ so it would be sad if I have to change it.
That was of course 3 years ago

If the PSU isn’t powerful enough you will notice it quite soon (might not even go through the windows install)....

The computer will probably do some really weird stuff if it does go through, blue screens, freezes and other "undesirable" stuff....

does your psu have a 24 pin atx connector?

Ayoub Ibrahim asks a good question. Sorry I didn't mention it woel. Your Abit board only requires a 20 pin ATX connector, the new board requires a 24 pin.

edit: 20 to 24 pin ATX adapters will probably stress the supply further and it was a bit close as it was. A new supply might be worth the money. I've heard good things about Seasonic supplies lately.

Agreed. And don't just use a 20-to-24 pin adapter, that won't work. Your system will be unstable.

Why oh why would you order an nVidia video card? *tsk*

Because they are cheaper than the comparable and available ATI part?

Yes I could not get a x1800xl to that price that was available now. I've had ati for several years but now I've gone to the dark side.

24 pin connector you say? What's the standard atx connector? I have to count pins. Would be sad if I have to order an expensive antec.

I have 20 pin connector it seems. But what about the 4pin 12V connector I also have? 20 + 4 = 24 But maybe the 4 pin connector has another purpose.

It seems that I've had my old computer too long. I am not even educated in connectors

Ok, since I now also need a new PSU. Please give me a recommendation. I would like a quiet PSU but I don't require a fan-less. Not too expensive but nothing cheap either.

Is FSP, Silverstone or HIPER good choices?

I think I will get one with about 400-500W of power.

IMO, you can go wrong with PC Power & Cooling:
