  • Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

My friend has 2 computers, a windows xp professional box and a debian box.

The Windows box is connected to the internet, and has two NICs. The Internet capable NIC is on the 172 network, and the secondary NIC is on a 192 network.

The secondary NIC on the Windows box is connected to the Debian box (which only has one NIC) via a crossover cable, thus enabling the two machines to talk to each other.

He wants a way to connect to the internet from the Debian box via the Windows box.

We tried enabling ICS, but it did not work.

We edited the registry to enable IP Forwarding. No dice.

We tried bridging the two network connections. Nada.

Is this possible? If so, how?

Enabling ICS is probably what you have to do, and then set up the other machine to use it, eg make sure it has the windows box as its the gatweway

I am not familar with Debian what options do you have to configure the network/internet/gateway connection?

All computers must be on the 192.168.1.x network for MS ICS to work. Technically MS requires that all computers that run off the ICS be using DHCP, as the ICS host/server becomes a DHCP server. Documentation:

Just remember that ICS is very limited and a lot of things won't work. You'd be better off getting a router.

We didn't use DHCP, but setting the Debian box to .2 did the trick. We are able to update Debian as needed. Thanks!
