I really can't stand seeing icon labels that are coloured. what is the registry setting that controls this. Since today I noticed that the "use drop shadows" makes no difference
    HELP.
And yes a full reinstall will be done but trying not to do so yet

"Coloured icon labels"? I don't know what you're talking about. How about some more info? A screenshot perhaps.

so you want transparent backgrounds for icon labels...could setting the label background to the desktop colour do this?

oh wait, i just re-read your original post. so the setting wasn't working? I had that problem once with the ClearType options. I found a website with lots of scripts to reset various parts of the registry. here's the url: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

One of the scripts on that page might have helped. I found one that worked for me!
