  • lookin at LCDs

my brother is lookin for an lcd for programming and graphic stuff (ie doesnt have to be fast response/good for games)

doesnt want anything too expensive, something along the lines of SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 711T looks about right

has to be digital/DVI, 1280x1024, probably 17" just because he cant afford a good 19", 16.7million colors, high contrast etc

To get 1280x1024 as a natural res, which is what you want in LCDs, you pretty much have to get a 19". They only run about $300 USD these days. NewEgg.com is selling the Samsung Syncmaster 915N is only $290 USD + $15 shipping after a mail in rebate. I'm sure you can find a good retailer in Canada to get it as a similar price.

pretty much all 17" are 1280, (as is mine - 730B)

the 915N is only 16.2mill colors, analog, and isnt as high contrast as that 711T

he was actually looking at 15" because of deskspace, but he does definitely need higher res
anyone know how a NEC or sony or something would compare in image quality?

Yeah, but looking at 1280 on a 17" is a eye sore. Plus, there's only a $25-$75 USD price difference between a good 17" vs. a good 19". If money is a huge limiting factor then I can see not upgrading, but $300 for a 19" LCD is a damn good price.

The 912T is 16.7 million colors, DVI, and decent contrast and brightness.

In the 17" line, this one from Plyview has got what you're looking for and some good ratings on NewEgg:

400 cm/m^2 brightness, 16.7M colors, 450:1 contrast ration, 1280x1024 resolution, DVI, $209 USD + shipping, and a perfect rating by customers of NewEgg. Looks like a winner.

Yeah, the problems with 17" glass are its small for the resolution, and the glass is also TN process, so its got crappy viewing angle and off-angle color inversion. Fine if you're looking at it straight on, but from any angle its going to be nasty.
