  • got a SuperDrive!

We just got a SuperDrive DVD-R at my office (we also have an old Pioneer 201 to compare it with). Unfortunately, we don't have any of the new blank media it uses (yet). I'll let you know how testing goes...

We should get media in for testing next week. I guess the only place to order media is Apple right now.

The drive is an internal Apple SuperDrive. I don't know if it's exactly the same as the PC model, but is says manufactured by Pioneer: model DVR-103PA (Jan 2001).

A friend of my boss got a few by calling Apple Service and ordering a "replacement" drive for their new Mac. I heard they closed that loophole pretty quick!

        more later...

          qupdate:

We got some media from Apple ($10 a disc, which seems like a good price...) and tested it out today. Again this is a internal drive put in a standard Mac G4 (400). It wouldn't burn a project authored on another machine, with DVD Toast Platinum. It just didn't work at all.

We did successfully burn a project created within Apple DVD Studio (and burned from DVD Studio). This disc did play fine in set-top players. I didn't test it myself, so I don't know which models were tested.

Supposedly the new version of DVD Toast will come out next week, so I hope to give a real workout to one of our discs authored on another system (Spruce or Daikin).
