I want to put together vob files from various dvds into one clip. Is it possible to get them in to premiere or is there another way to do it.

    Any suggestions?

I would suggest you convert them to mpeg-2 or avi using one of the numerous utilities that Googling will find, then you would be able to take them into whatever editor/authoring app. you wish. However, depending on what you do, there may be a loss of quality and you would lose extras like subtitles and extra sound tracks.

I like using TMPGEnc DVD Author. It converts all the contents of the VIDEO_TS diectory into MPEG-2 and also encodes in AC3 audio.

I have tried the trial version of Super DVD Ripper. Works fine although I now have what was a 3gb set that when taken into Ulead DVD Workshop ends up a 17gb set of VOBs. Guess I will have to compress with DVD Shrink.

I read elswhere that renaming the VOB to MPG also works. Tried that and it does work, however when I put the renamed file into Ulead DVD Workshop, the video will play in preview but no sound. Any clues?

Have a look to see what your audio codec is. Probably you have AC3 audio.

AC3, aka: Dolby Digital, is the most commonly used audio format on DVD discs. As such you either have to have software capable of handling (usually commercial, like MediaStudio Pro etc. or hacker software) or need to transcode it to MPEG audio compatable with DVD's (MPEG Layer 2, 16 bit 48 khz). Uncompressed 16 bit 48khz PCM audio is also compatable, but takes up too much disc space.

                Hi Doc

I understand that which you have described. My query of Debbie was in checking my settings of audio codec (AC3). I dont know where that information resides.

                  Dasher,

Sorry for not being clear. I was refering to the type audio codec. Doc. has been more specific.

Find what type of audio compression you are dealing with. You will get the info. from your player. Then make sure that you have the codec installed on your computer and also make sure that your editing software is "seeing" it.

As you probably know, playing a clip and editing it is a different matter. For Playing you will require just a flter but for editing you will require a specific codec. As Doc. said, you can always transcode to a different compression providing the editing software can read the audio information.

                    Thanks Guys

If I had any hair I would pull it all out.

My concern was that after renaming a vob file to mpg and inputting it to DVDWS the sound wouldn'yt play. Tried again out of curiousity to find the audi codec in DVDWS, yep the Bloddy thing plays the audio track.

So the simple answer to my original query is "Rename the vob to mpg edit and create dvd with whatever.

Thanks all for your help. Did learn some things.
